Slayers REVOLUTION #11 — Next!

September 10th, 2008

I don’t think I have it in me to attempt a Try joke as well.

Impressions:

Not a tremendously exciting episode. Not even an averagely exciting episode. Sure, Zanaffar rages through a few cities while Duclis practically cuts himself in angsty glee over it, but given the number of Dragon Slaves, giant golems, giant piles of boulders, and other hazards in the Slayers-verse that seem to be visited upon the populace with a disturbing regularity, it’s amazing that anybody builds their homes out of anything but mud and sticks. I did perk up a bit at the end when they said that they’re heading back to Seyruun though that made the entire cheerleader "we’re all in this together" speech right before it kind of stupid. "This has nothing to do with you! Oh, and by the way, he’s about to destroy your home, and probably kill your family and friends." On the other hand, the preview showed Syphiel instead of Phil. That’s just not right at all.

Not all that much to say otherwise. Lots and lots of setup. After Zanaffar tears the building apart, the gang tries some spells (reflected) before Lina shoots an ineffectual Dragon Slave at it. Pocotta buzzes it for a moment or two (he literally just flies circles around Zan while the beasty just sits there like a lump) before the Sword of Light peters out. Then Zan burrows away and we get a lot of Duclis gloating about bringing despair to the rest of the world while Zanaffar just tears cities apart. Pocotta tries to leave to take them down on his own, but Lina stops him and "blah blah blah what are friends for" before the Sword of Light literally starts rumbling in his gut and then shoots a beam towards Seyruun. You really would miss very little by passing this one over.

PS, yes, I know that season 2 of Revolution will be called Glory. Not as silly as Try, but close.

Preview:

Ugh. Go away, Sylphiel. You are by far the worst of the auxiliary Slayers chicks.

I dunno I think after this Slayers I’m done. Unless wait is this season gonna end at episode 13 and “season 2” will be the rest of the 13?? What’s with splitting season these days is it more profitable or something

  • Aroduc says:

Yep, Hinano, that’s exactly what it is.

I’m not sure what the deal is with splitting shows over a short term is either. The business model doesn’t even work in a way that that’s a particularly useful plan. My guess is that it gives the production team a little time off to gauge fan reaction and tailor the second half appropriately, but even that seems like a bit of a stretch.

This episode was nice, although it went around on topics that have been discussed thoroughly during its run. Although I have loved the way this series has been adapted, they way that EVERYTHING has to be explained AGAIN, even for characters that have first hand knowledge on some (“Hearing about the legends of Zannafer??? You f***ing fought a complete Zannaffer yourselves!!). The redundancy is kind of insulting, but then again, they haven’t really messed it up. Just…a very tiring approach.
