C74 — TWilight refrAIN Impressions

August 16th, 2008

I really liked this game’s predecessor, TWIlight INSanity, and so far, I really like TWAIN too. I’m not sure why it hates FRAPS though. As soon as I loaded it, the framerate plummetted, but it was fine so long as FRAPS wasn’t running. Whatever. I was all ready to praise it for feeling quite a bit more ‘new’ than Subterranean Animism, but then the stage E1 boss (Mimi) theme is a remix of one of the TWINS boss themes. Oh well, it still feels like they’re doing a lot more with this one than Zun is with the Touhou series as of late. The rather nice art is certainly a pleasant change of pace, and it certainly has one thing the Touhou series doesn’t… pretty boys in dresses. The style is definitely a lot more cutesy and less techno-crazy than TWINS, which I kind of miss, but this is still an extremely solid game that you should definitely check out.

Mimi looks a lot like Mia. I was surprised when I saw her, and also when I heard the music. I like it that way though.

But I’m not sure I like the gameplay. Correct me if I’m wrong, but the game’s difficulty level changes on the go depending on your rank… right? Because there were many times that I was breezing around (well, after playing SA…), but other times when I had trouble. And usually, after getting hit (with my rank going down), the patterns seemed to become much easier.

I prefer when I can have a fixed difficulty level. Still, I’m liking the art and music a lot, and the production values are good. I also want to see all the endings :P

Yeah, it’s sort of a weird mechanic. EoSD had a similar mechanic, but it was totally invisible to the player. You could create some really screwed up/broken patterns by hacking it to absurd levels though.

Getting it now; a shame I missed TWINS, but TWAIN looks to be pretty awesome too.

    Yum, shota trap.

  • […] But then it makes fullscreen screenshots look like shit. Oh, and sad to disappoint, but contrary to what Aroduc says, there are no pretty boys in […]
