Ryoko’s Case Files #01 — I’m Out of Witty Things To Say

July 5th, 2008

Seriously, my brain is fried.

Impressions:

I have really mixed feelings about this show. I didn’t think I’d be too much of a fan, but I really like how it started. Nice confusing prophetic dream, then Izumida immediately gets thrown in with a relatively eccentric boss who chases some guy, beats up some more, and then makes him go bathing suit shopping with him. Don’t get all hot and bothered, it wasn’t fanservicey or tasteless at all. The most you’ll get here is Ryoko’s bare back in a cocktail dress. It unfortunately got a lot slower for most of the episode after that. At least for all his annoying ineptness around Ryoko, Izumida has no problems holding his own in a fight.

All the production values were about average, maybe a little bit above, but nothing to really remark on for weal or woe. The background music ran the gamut though. The tune they used for silliness was really jarring and irritating, but the rest of it was pretty solid (gee, where have we seen that before, Mai HiME?). They were definitely going for a sort of jazzy 1980s feel, but it just didn’t feel like they quite hit it. The character designs also kind of needed a little more consistency. A few of them looked like they were refugees from the 70s. I think it was the face or the eyes. Everybody else’s was highly detailed, while they were… well… not. Maybe they were just victims of a drive-by facelift.

It seems like it could be a pretty solid show, but I thought it lost a lot of the inertia it created for itself with an interesting start and only regained it closer to the end. Still, for all the complaining I do, I’m still mostly enjoying Kyouran Kazoku Nikki and Zettai Karen Children, and I don’t know if I’d have the time or energy to pick up a third show. I did four shows in a day for one season and it damn near killed me. I’ll give this one a thumbs up for the first episode at any rate and we’ll see where it goes from there.

No OP, so nothing to post. *shrug*
