Lazy Summer Days

May 7th, 2008

Collected thoughts on assorted matters.

Ahhhh summer… starts with people having finals, then everybody goes on vacation or *gasp* actually goes outside. I went outside once. There was some kind of horrible burning thing in the sky that frightened me horribly. I got off easy though. There are also bears outside.

This anime season is a little hard for me to get overly excited over as well. I’m still watching quite a bit, but my bread and meat are more non-melodramatic (and non-painfully shounen) action shows, which have been in short supply for the last couple seasons. I miss the days when I had StrikerS, Ikki Tousen, Tokyo Majin, Kekkaishi and Kenichi all vying for my attention. Thankfully, summer’s got Slayers Revolution, Sekirei, Ikki Tousen GG, Koihime Musou, Birdy, etc… so… it should be awesomeness incarnate.

At the moment though, aside from the always awesome 30 Rock, I think I need to pimp out the stateside Spectacular Spiderman, which is doing an absolutely awesome job of adapating the Ultimate storyline. The character designs are a little rough around the edges, and the theme song is… well… it is what it is. What the hell is "the speed of time?" Aunt May is always around and she sucks like you wouldn’t believe, but that’s pretty usual for Spiderman. I don’t know if he could exist without the Aunt May anchor swung around his neck. On the other hand, they turned Fancy Dan in the Enforcers into some kind of ninja, which I’m perfectly fine with.

Episode 5: Spidey vs Sandman

Still, the action is awesome, Spidey’s banter is clever and funny (seriously, they open episode 7 with a ‘defenestration’ joke), and they really are stringing together a full season plot. The great thing about that clip below is that it’s just added frosting at the end of the episode after already spending 7 minutes on a fight between Spidey and Rhino. It also doesn’t have any of the lame censorship issues from the 90s Spiderman series. Spidey can actually punch people this time around… hell… he clubs Sandman with a girder. I don’t think it’s quite as good as Justice League, but it’s still an awesome show in otherwise tepid morass of mediocrity. I’m tempted to start covering it, but it airs on Saturdays, which are already packed… and the season’s over in about a month. Felicia Hardy shows up in a week and a half though, and she is the single awesomest character in the entire Marvel universe. This is an unarguable truth. Plus, the season finale arc is going to be Venom. I’m all aquiver with anticipation.

Episode 6: Spidey and the Crimelord of New York

But anyway… there’s lots of fun doujin stuff coming up soon at the very least. Reitaisai’s at the end of the month, bringing with it Scarlet Weather Rhapsody and the trial version for Subterranean Animism along with random Touhou remixes. Summer Comiket is also coming up and there should be all sorts of fun games to play then. Unfortunately, that’s not now, but such is life. I have been updating a lot of the backend stuff on the blog and I’m having to deal with less spam, but I’m sure such things don’t really interest most of you.

At least it is rather nice outside, even if there are angry angry rabid bears.

I think it’s awfully uncanny that one of the first paragraphs bears (BEARS ROFL GET IT) a strange resemblance to a particular conversation I had with my friend on IRC last night, albeit worded differently.

    [03:48] fuckin bears
[03:54] i got attacked by one when i left my house
    [04:05] r u serious
    [04:05] are you ok?
[04:06] if you ever get attacked by a bear again the best thing to do is to run downhill, because bears are top heavy and cannot navigate down steep terrain.
[04:15] i thought it was a bear at first but on second thought it might’ve just been the sunlight

Of course he was being pretty sarcastic too.

And then again it’s unfortunate that this comment system has mistaken the name tags for HTML tags, thereby cutting them off.

I feel like an idiot. D:
