That was certainly something else.

Impressions:

I’m not even sure what Zetsubou Fight was all about. Various monstrous forms of the girls would just randomly fight at the start of the episode and then between the two parts. It was all done with kind of crappy SNES animation… all stop motion and jerky. The first little brawl between a shaggy Maria and Kaeresaur ended with them eating a passing Itoshiki. I’m not sure if there’s a context where that would ever make sense. The second one was even stranger, if that’s even possible. The third one had Itoshiki fight the 2001 Monolith and then they all developed language. Oops. there was one at the end of the episode after the ED too where the monsters had developed society… but where now just using Rubix cubes to beat on eachother instead of boulders.

Anyway, part one was some pun about being tired that resulted in Maria chopping everybody and everything as the ‘boke’ part of the joke. Then Chiri tried to instruct her in the proper ‘boke.’ Then Maria tried to chop an actress and met her match and had to go learn from a master.

Part two started with Itoshiki having a photo of Chiri when she wasn’t paying attention… so in revenge, she and Maria took pictures of them all in embarassing circumstances… Itoshiki lounging with his shirt off, people taking bribes, etc. I did laugh that they couldn’t get a picture of the Yakuza teacher. Then Kafuka busted in and claimed that it was all clumsiness (well, ‘dojikko’). That broke Chiri’s mind and she tried to learn proper ‘dojikko’ manners, but went overboard… using acid instead of water, setting fire to the entire school instead of just food she was making, running into Itoshiki with a knife and then bopping her head and going "tehe" to make it cute instead of embarrassing. Then during surgery… more dojikko antics from Itoshiki’s brother. Meru was also buying a bra during this sequence for some reason.

Well, aside from not having any of the stylistic experiments, this was certainly one of the weirder episodes. The first part was heavily HEAVILY pun-based, so while I was with Maria in spirit, I’m pretty sure a lot of that sailed right over my head. The dojikko stuff was all pretty hilarious though. Yes yes, dojikkos are cute, they’re also apparently something to be feared when done properly. I think they could have done more with the embarassing moments before seguing into the dojikko bit, but apparently they really wanted to do those Zetsubou Fight sequences. I’m still scratching my head as to what those were all about. I think Shaft’s weirdness got a little too far out there on that one for me. I did like the music that accompanied them though.

Oh, and by the way, Lucky Star sucks.
