Ultimate Survivor Kaiji #08 — It Figures…

November 21st, 2007

I switch over from the tiresome Labyrinth and end up seeing naked men.

Impressions:

I renew my statement of annoyance at the Night Wizard raw situation. To make matters worse, episodes like this don’t exactly convince me that my decision to switch off the faint hope of more Byakko was a good one. Basically, Kaiji wins against Funai, getting all the stars, but there’s not enough time to run out their deck, so he gives the stars to the other two and then loses his last one to Furuhata in order to be able to remove his entire deck from the playing area. He gets stripped and tossed in the room beyond where he reminisces with some of the other unfortunates. Ando and Furuhata are then supposed to gift their extra stars to him during the buy/sell period, but Ando gets greedy and decides to sell his extra stars instead.

This episode actually didn’t enrage my mathematician blood as much as usual. Kaiji actually showed some decent insight on how to get around the system and burn their deck without all of them biting it. Me? Ten minutes ago, I’d have just given cards to the people with two or one stars and said “go nuts.” That’d have been intelligent. At least with one minute left, he picked the best option available instead of waiting 30 seconds for something else to happen.

The problem is that it made my intolerance for your standard expositiontastic series come gurgling up like a week old chili dog. Too many (all) of Kaiji’s schemes default to “I have this great scheme, but it involves long periods of sitting around and hoping that nothing bad happens.” I’m a bit curious to see how he gets out of this one since I can’t think of much off the top of my head, though I imagine it’ll have something to with with the three outstanding scissors and maybe him claiming that it was unfair since those are three guarenteed wins for him (they were the cards flushed some 5 or so episodes earlier). I’m just happy that they’re finally done with rock, paper, scissors and can finally move on to a real game. This business should have been over weeks ago.

What the…? Naked Men? honestly I prefer Evil Horie Yui, well I can’t do anything about this, is Aroduc’s Decision, at least I hope if something really important an Incredible take place in Detective Labyrinth, we’ll be able to see a post about that.

Rest assured, it was a totally Byakkoless episode, unfortunately.

Read the Manga if Kaiji the animation is bothering you. The Anime suffers from pacing and leaves out a lot which can make his logic seem faulty, but its still ummatched in intenseness, short of Akagi.

On the other hand, you have to understand that Kaiji isnt the type to ‘take advantage of the weak’ which is a golden rule in his book which he’ll never encroach on. This doesnt seem stressed enough in the comic (its also a huge no no in Japan) whereas in comic its elaborated on, and to top it off Americans tend to want to win at whatever cost and sacrifice…Kaiji’s samaritanship seem naive to a viewer who wouldnt spare his life for another.

In any case, Kaiji injected a lot of thought into what most people would instantly dismiss as being strategyless and completely random game.
