Tales of Symphonia #03 — Colette…. :sadness:

October 24th, 2007

Don’t cry, martyr girl!

Impressions:

Despite them probably not going to make it out of Sylvarant and into any of the later Teth’e’alla stuff, I really am loving the adaptation job that UFOTable is doing here. Compared to the earlier two episodes, they only covered a very short portion here, but it’s one of the more important parts of the early game… Lloyd and Kratos’ revenge for their mother/lover’s death. Lloyd is a little more on the screaming and crying side than I’d prefer, but since this is about as bad as it gets for him, I can forgive that. His girlfriend is losing all her facilities and he’s been using something that killed his mother.

Aaaaanyway, some good, albeit short fights this episode and it’s leaving behind the video game roots more and more. Nobody yelled out their attack name and then shot a beam of generic energy. I’ll rip out the initial invasion into the Human Ranch since that’s the most cohesive part. As always, I’m concerned for the pacing and how they’re going to end this, especially with only one episode left and them having shown Zelos, so you’d think they’d at least tie in some of the Teth’e’alla portion, but they may just skip the “Colette becomes an emotionless doll” part and leave off with a bit of a cliffhanger as they enter there. Maybe UFOTable is jonesing to make a full series or something. *shrug* I certainly wouldn’t be opposed.

Oh, and we got a new ED this episode made of claymation jokes about the game (in normal UFOTable fashion) and the song Colette was singing for Lloyd.

New ED

The Human Ranch Invasion

Kratos stands guard over the camp while the others sleep. Lloyd nods off, but movement makes him wake up. He looks around and can’t find Colette. Kratos leaps down and tells him that she took a walk. Lloyd starts yelling at him for letting her do something so dangerous. Kratos holds up a pair of mugs of hot chocolate for Lloyd, and Lloyd apologizes.

On a cliffside, Colette looks at her hands while flexing them. Lloyd comes up behind her with the chocolate. He asks her if she’s hurt from becoming an angel in any way. She says that she’s just fine, but seems to her that Lloyd is becoming more listless.

He tells her that he’s worried about her, especially how she doesn’t seem to sleep anymore. He suddenly becomes very serious, making Colette laugh. The two share their chocolate while Colette sings for him. Lloyd tries to take a drink, but the chocolate is way too hot. He looks over to check on Colette’s and sees her directly holding the mug with no effects. Lloyd grabs her shoulder, spilling her chocolate.

As the journey continues on, Colette narrates how the change to become an angel has started to change her body, but the journey continues anyway. Lloyd’s concern for Colette becomes more and more evident to the others.

Returning to the cliffside, Colette tells Lloyd about exactly what’s happening and says that it’s all for saving the world. Lloyd starts to cry and calls her an idiot while hugging her close. Colette apologizes again to him.

A village is under attack by the Desians. They mercilessly cut down villagers. A little girl stands screaming in the middle of the village. One goes to kill her, but Sheena appears and blocks the blow. She begins fighting with the Desians and defeats them all, but falls to her knees exhausted. The girl asks if she’s okay, and Sheena screams at her to run away.

More Desians approach. As Sheena starts to lose consciousness, she sees Lloyd and the others running up.

As she begins to come to, she hears Colette and Raine arguing about whether or not to heal her. Later, Sheena is awake and explaining what happened. She demands to know why they saved her. Raine tells her that she’ll have to ask Colette. Kratos comes in. The others ask if he found any survivors. He shakes his head and drops the girl’s torn up teddy bear.

Colette asks if there’s anything they can do, but Kratos says that they should keep going. It’s better if they save the world sooner than to save a couple people now. Lloyd argues with him briefly, but Sheena cuts them off.

The group looks over a map and tries to decide how to attack the Desian compound. Colette looks back towards Sheena and nods to Lloyd. He goes over to her and asks if she wants to go with them. He holds out his hand and introduces himself to Sheena again. She grunts in agreement, and the rest of the group smiles.

At the Human Ranch, security is tight. The Desians are trying without success to create new Ex-Spheres. An alarm goes off and the Desians are sent scrambling. At the entrance, they have the party completely surrounded. Sheena summons her Wind Shikigami and clears a path for them. Colette thanks her, and Sheena accidently starts to tell them to be careful before yelling at them to get their tails in gear.

Lloyd and Kratos leads the charge with Lloyd activating his Ex-Sphere to slaughter about a dozen Desians. The head Desian (Kvar) sees him using the “Angel Ex-Sphere” on the monitor and grins.

Inside the compound the team runs onward. The doors begin to close. Lloyd charges forward and slides under one of them alone. He yells back to them, but they can’t hear him. The door at the other end of the hallway opens, allowing him to move onward.

At a control station, Raine releases the captured humans. She leaves directing them to Genis. Kratos excuses himself and walks away.

Lloyd gasps when he finds a ton of humans in capsules. Kvar walks out, explaining that it’s for growing Ex-Spheres. As Lloyd looks at one of them in horror, an Ex-Sphere bursts out of its chest. Kvar explains that his Ex-Sphere is the prototype for all the others and was grown in his mother.

Lloyd holds his sword tighter and then rushes at Kvar, yelling at him for killing Lloyd’s mother. He leaps away and summons three droids. He also tells Lloyd that he wasn’t the one responsible for his mother’s death… Lloyd’s father was. He snaps his fingers and electricity shoots all around the room. Lloyd is blasted back and a ton of the capsules break, spilling the people onto the ground.

Kvar continues, saying that when Ex-Spheres are left in somebody too long, they become a monster, and that’s what happened to his mother. As she transforms, we see Kratos standing behind her. Lloyd yells that its a lie and grabs his swords as his Ex-Sphere glows. He tries to attack the Desian, but can’t hit. The Desian takes a baseball swing at Lloyd’s head and knocks him down for the electricity to jolt him some more.

The Desian walks over and steps on Lloyd’s hand, saying how he wanted to see the power of the Ex-Sphere for himself, but a human could never unlock it. Lloyd is fixated on his mother and father though and tries to pull himself up on the Desian’s leg. He knocks Lloyd down and tries to finish him, but a blast of electricty knocks his staff away. Kratos stands at the end of the hallway.

Sheena grabs Lloyd and pulls him out of danger. Kratos rushes forward and impales the Desian. As the two stand together, Kvar says he was doing what he was supposed to. Kratos angrily yells at him and then pulls his sword out and Kvar, dead.

Explosions begin to rock the Human Ranch as the Desians try to retreat. Pronymia and Rodyle watch the destruction. She says both Kvar and Forcystus are shameful failures.

Sheena watches the villagers start to rebuild the town. The little girl comes up to her and Sheena apologizes for not being able to protect them more. Off to the side, Raine and Genis are arguing.

Lloyd stands near a river, contemplating his Ex-Sphere. He gets ready to throw it away, but Kratos stops him. Kratos tells him that the power is there with him to fight, and protect the important things. Lloyd says that he understands, but can’t use something made by the Desians out of a life and gets ready to throw it away again. Kratos grabs his arm this time and Lloyd drops it while saying that it’s his fault his mother died. Kratos picks up the Ex-Sphere and walks away with it.

Days later, the party defeats the guardian of the Water Shrine. Genis noticed that Lloyd wasn’t using the Ex-Sphere to fight anymore, but says that it’s okay, because the rest are strong.

Colette prays to Remiel once again and he gives his usual speech. Colette looks back at Lloyd as Remiel disappears, but he can’t meet her eyes.

That sunset, Lloyd is moping while looking at the Tower of Salvation. Colette comes up behind him.

Lloyd starts talking about how silly his promise was. Colette doesn’t say a word, but smiles at him. Lloyd finally realizes that she’s lost her voice. He becomes upset with what’s happening to her, but she picks up his hand and sketches out “I’m sorry” on it with her finger.

She continues talking to Lloyd like this. He starts crying and hitting his head, saying that he can’t protect her from anything and yelling that he has no clue what he’s doing. Colette hugs him.

Kratos stands guard alone. Lloyd walks up and starts to say something, but Kratos cuts him off and throws him the Ex-Sphere. It glows and Lloyd smiles. He pulls out his swords and tells Kratos that this time will be different. The two start training in earnest while Lloyd narrates how he won’t lose anymore. Every he’ll do will be for her.
