Kekkaishi #36 — Super Spectacular One Hour Special!

September 11th, 2007

I don’t know whether to be overjoyed that there’s two eps of Kekkaishi this week, or somewhat pained by the 160 caps to go through. :-p

Who am I kidding? This is for McDonald’s greatest triumph! Episode 37 will be posted in like… 15 minutes.

Impressions:

Screw impressions, go to the next episode! It’ll be up shortly.

Shige is going through the house, waking up all the Sumimuras while Shion’s puppets creep all over the place. They know that it’s Kokuboro’s doing and Karasumori is in danger. Shige tells Toshimori to protect his father, who feels hurt by that and whips out his charms, showing that he can fight too. Toshimori’s not fooled.

At Karasumori, Gen has transformed arms and legs, and all three are destroying all the small fry with ease. Above, Byakku’s camera insects transmit them fighting up to him and Shion. He’s not overly impressed by their fighting abilities, and the Princess just keeps waiting.

Back on the ground, Yoshi seals up a ton of ayakashi, but they fall to pieces, slashed by Gen as his barrier is forming. Yoshi yells at Gen to stay out of his way and Shion notes how their team work is lacking. Yoshi runs to Tokine and the two stand back to back to cover eachother. Kokuboro’s members note that the two together could be a problem, but as long as their ayakashi follow orders, they should be taken care of.

One ayakashi that is mostly legs and a ball is racing along the ground to power up at Karasumori… and then slashed up by Gen. Shion facepalms in exasperation. Byakku notes that it’s impossible for simple ayakashi to understand what they’re trying to do, and thus they’ll die. On cue, a couple nearby ayakashi start talking about powering up and leaping to the attack, so Byakku heads over and tosses a fireball between them to lay the law down.

From the ground, the Kekkaishi see a blaze of red energy come hurtling towards them.  It hits the ground in a massive explosion. Kaguro comes surfing down on a bug as well, but still hovers well above the flames. Gagin rises out of the carnage and looks towards the two Kekkaishi. Gen also sees him from the tree he’s lurking in.

Gagin looks around in disgust and wants to know where these brats are that are supposedly so powerful and can’t believe that these are them. Yoshi and him start yelling at each other while Shion and Byakku remark on his temper. Gagin then facepalms (lots of that this episode) at having his hopes up for a real battle. A few ayakashi float overhead and ask him what to do, but he gets pissed off at the situation in general and nukes all the ayakashi in the area.

The rest of the ayakashi retreat back to the cloud as Gagin wonders aloud what the Princess was thinking. Yoshi picks up on “Princess” and Byakku calls Gagin an idiot for letting that slip, but thinks that it doesn’t matter anymore.

Gagin fires a blast at Yoshi and Tokine. Yoshi creates a barrier and stops it, but the shot doesn’t dissipate. Gagin then makes two more and blasts the barrier from both sides. From the smoke, one of his shots comes flying back at him, but he deflects it into the clouds above, and then turns and punches a tree that was thrown at him by Gen.

Yoshi and Tokine are safe above as Gagin assesses the situation and how they deflected his attack and escaped. He laughes, and apologizes for not taking them seriously enough. He thinks this could be interesting after all and turns to deal with Gen first. He then releases flames all around him.

Back at the Sumimura house, Shige is making easy work of Shion’s clones. One of the clones is trying to get into the house, but protective charms are keeping it out, letting Toshi destroy it with ease. The clones are endless though and keeping Shige in place. He suddenly senses a huge miasma coming from Karasumori.

Gagin transforms into his full giant demon form… sadly… using the same animation as the OP’s had for the last three months. Surrounded by flame, he’s ready to attack, and Yoshi is thinking that he can’t even get close. Shion and Byakku wonder if he’s overdoing it a bit.

Gen thinks to himself that Gagin’s too damn big for Yoshi to dispel with his metsu, so it’s up to him and his speed to at least cut him into managable pieces. Gagin releases blasts at the Kekkaishi and Gen at the same time.

Yoshi blocks while Gen dodges, but then Gagin appears right behind him. Gen dodges Gagin’s punch, but when he tries to kick, has his leg caught and then viciously burned. Tokine makes a barrier knocking Gagin’s arm away and freeing Gen, who retreats into the bushes.

Gagin heals his arm and thinks that Gen really is fast, but nothing he can’t deal with. Yoshi forms a huge barrier around Gagin and tries to dispel him, but when the smoke clears, Gagin is completely unharmed.

Gagin flexes and turns back towards Gen. He blasts energy at him, which Gen dodges, but then keeps up the attack. Gen is able to dodge, but can’t find an opening to attack. Gagin charges up his flames to slam Gen, but Yoshi puts a barrier between the two, letting Gen fall back. The fight moves into the forest where the Kekkaishi can’t see well to support him. They get the idea to start deflecting Gagin’s fire into the ayakashi cloud to at least do -something-.

Shion is especially bored with the fight and wants to know what the deal is with Gen.

Gen remembers back to Masamori telling him to protect Karasumori and tries to catch and deflect one of Gagin’s shots. He does so, but is sent flying and Gagin just punches the shot away. From his pocket, Kaguro’s egg asks him why he’s fighting and not using his full power. Byakku sees him apparently talking to himself.

Gen gets up and tells Gagin to come. Gagin forms six fireballs and then combines them. Tokine and Yoshi try to block it, but both their barriers are easily destroyed and it blasts full force into Gen who deflects it upwards. He wants to defeat Gagin, but remembers back to Hiba telling him to never transform again.

Yoshi and Tokine finally get to Gen, but he yells at them to stay out of this fight. Yoshi says that he can’t… Gen’s arms… and we see that both Gen’s arms have been totally blasted off by that last shot. Gen gets up and concentrates and his arms immediately regenerate, but he’s surprised as well. He’s not supposed to heal this fast. Yoshi starts yelling at him some more, but Gagin drops a rain of fire on them.

Yoshi and Tokine use their barriers to block and dodge the shots. Shion’s getting a bit concerned about Gagin taking his sweet time because the Yagyu might show up if they take too long. Byakku says that they’re handled.

The Yagyu are busy fighting an army of demons with Masamori leading the fight. He looks up at the moon.

Karasumori’s protectors are still on the defensive. Yoshi and Tokine are looking for an opening, but Gen has had enough. What use is this power if he can’t use it. He is not the same kind of monster as the one before him, and he should be able to use it. Kaguro’s egg starts talking to him again, egging him on, telling him to open up to the power.

The dogs are watching from above and thinking that things aren’t looking too good. They wonder if reinforcements will come, but Hakubi says that there’s nobody from the Yukimuras to come since the grandmother left. Madarao makes up his mind and tells Hakubi that they’re going to create a chance for the kids. The two fly up to Gagin and start flying all around him, distracting him.

On the ground, a huge blast rips apart Yoshi’s barrier and sends them flying. They cringe from the expected fire, but Gagin is distracted by the dogs. Gen darkly tells them to get back and stay out of his way. Yoshi argues, but Gen says that to defeat this monster, one has to become one. Yoshi tells his him that he’s wrong and Gen’s not a monster, absolutely not a monster, right?

The dogs finally get fried by Gagin and he then charges a huge blast to finish off the kiddos. Gen walks forward, but says that Yoshi really is hopeless after all. He mentally apologizes to Masamori, and charges up. Shion thinks it could be trouble if Gen transforms, but Byakku thinks that the corruption of Karasumori will do more harm than help.

Gen fully transforms into his beast shape in front of the Kekkaishi and roars to the heavens.
