Since when did Daigo become a particularly important character?

Impressions:

Honestly, I’m watching this show to see people fighting monsters and kicking the shit out of grotesque zombie things, not for an extended discourse on whatever strange Japanese or Buddhist mythology they’ve bastardized for their purposes. That said, they are setting the stage relatively decent for some nice matchups later. Hopefully they won’t all turn into giant monster versus giant monster though. Giant berserker tiger Daigo just had me rolling my eyes. I mean, really… you had this guy beat… why’d you have to go turn into a giant snake just to piss him off enough into becoming a giant tiger?

I went back and watched the first season OP again and it did change more than I thought, so I went ahead and uploaded the new OP below.

Second Season OP

Summary:

In a jail somewhere, a bald man… Magatsu Renji… is sitting alone in a cell. It was a flashback and he thinks of Daigo and says his name aloud.

Mibu and Hiyuu take their stances and get ready to fight. Elsewhere, Komaki hears an explosions and heads to investigate. The others are still fighting against the Kenbu, but have pretty much won. Mibu and Hiyuu fight and both note that the other uses the same style. Mibu even readies his glove.

Komaki meets up with Daigo, but the field of decaying objects starts to close in on them. Hiyuu and Mibu’s fight continues. Their fists collide and then Mibu leaps back. Mibu looks down and sees that he’s stepped on the picture from the girl’s grave. The police arrive on the scene, but Mibu and Hiyuu are gone.

Raito has defeated his opponent, and apologizes for not taking it easy on her though says that he won’t kill her. Yukino finally shows up to make sure that he’s fine.

Komaki and Daigo are hiding out in some pipe. She notices that his hand is hurt, so wraps it with her scarf saying that it’s what companions do. Renji eventually finds them, turning rain into stone as he walks to create platforms. Komaki says that it’s amazing and urges Daigo to run, but Renji collapses the tunnel on them. She sees the torn out sharp pinions and debris and moves to attack Renji. Renji attacks Daigo and petrifies him from the torso down. This pisses off Komaki and she flings the debris at him. He easily dodges, and grabs Komaki… turning her whole body to stone. Renji taunts Daigo and releases him from his petrification. He collapses… but sees Komaki’s scarf around his hand and yells in rage.

Hiyuu is doing his own inspection. He finds Kyouichi’s broken sword and then his hand suddenly hurts. A red explosion and we see Daigo face down in a crater.

Later, Anko has an e-mail from Aoi saying that everything is okay. Maria tries to chew her out for protecting them for skipping class.

Elsewhere, everybody is gathering and trying to figure out what happened. They’re missing Daigo, Kyouichi and Komaki though. The old man from the very first episode shows up and basically says that he has the answers.

Random generic punk guy is worried about Kyouichi and is trying to tell the dragqueens what happened to him. All that he has left is Kyouichi’s cloth sheath though.

The old man tells them to follow him to learn about the Kenbu. They head into the forest to a misty house where the other old man from episode #1 is waiting. Aoi is worried about Komaki and asks about her. They say that she’s in grave danger, but won’t tell Aoi anything else for now.

We then get a long discussion about the new enemy… the 12 Generals. The drag queens know about them as well as the exposition jumps back between the two. It’s mostly just generic yada yada powers are fearsome, etc. At some point, Anko also stumbled in and overheard that Kyouichi is in a bad way. Hiyuu also thinks that the techniques he saw Mibu use are strangely familiar.

Mibu and Ukon (the swordsman who fought Kyouichi) are back at their HQ. Another man comes in and asks them how things went. He takes out a piece of paper and telekinetically folds it into a crane before sending it flying into the sky.

The exposition is continuing with the elders. Hiyuu asks about Daigo and Komaki, though they say that they don’t know, but it’s probably bad. We see a brief shot of the old men holding a baby along with a couple unknown people.

Back in the city, Daigo finally comes to. Hiyuu senses it. Daigo returns to teh train where Renji was waiting for him before. Hiyuu’s hand suddenly begins the sharp pains again. Renji has the statue of Komaki behind him. Renji keeps talking about how they used to be friends through scenes of them causing trouble and Renji being beaten by assumably his father. Renji eventually killed his father and Daigo walked in on him. Through this, Daigo is breathing heavily and his eyes are completely blank.

Renji then turns into a huge monster hydra. Daigo’s collapses, but looks and sees Komaki’s statue. His power starts to take over and erupts from his body. Hiyuu’s hand glows and the pain becomes unbearable. Daigo erupts as a giant white tiger and starts tearing the heads off of Hydra Renji. The curse on Komaki finally breaks, but Daigo keeps attacking.

There’s a little more exposition from the nurses and the drag queens about the nature of their power before we see Kyouichi bandaged up and unconscious but still breathing in the house of the random old man from the last episode.
