Utawarerumono 2 #15 — Obligatory Giant Monster

January 16th, 2016

Nice of the protagonists to bother showing up this week.

Impressions:

Right back to being a mess, but at least it's not quite to entire episodes about taking baths and reading softcore porn. If not for taking the 90 seconds normally reserved for the OP, the protagonists wouldn't have even appeared in the first half of the episode. Thrill how there's some… random battles being fought miles away. These are totally important things that may be relevant to the story at some point eventually, and definitely of equal importance to the giant monster stomping around, nuking a city right in front of them.

Unfortunately, the giant monster was handled pretty badly too. It… stomped around, and shot some exploding bombs of fire while Haku looked horrified by it. For a very, very long time. If you want a scene to be visceral and emotional, don't stretch it out for goddamned minutes on end. And the characters have to goddamned do something. Don't just stand there, explaining and talking about it. Do something that draws me into the story and the struggle against it. If you don't even try goddamned anything, that's not going to give any kind of feeling of hopelessness. Especially when it then ends with the goddamned belly dancers running up and relatively effortlessly blocking an attack, leading it to poof back into a guy who just wanders away.

Next Episode:

…Back to shenanigans, apparently.

I remember back when this had me more disappointed than anything in years.

comment got cut off for some reason (my fat fingers hit enter too early?) but it seems like Japan took that comment as a challenge.

Who needs MCs anyway, that’s so cliche and outdated. Out with predetermined character relevance.

I like how he’s basically a plot device, that’ll just be used at the end of the show, at this point.

  • Neclord X says:

    Well, that scalated fast

Haku is a big disappointment.having not played the game I expected haku to take monster from or at least have some hidden powers.they pointed out that he was physically weak but had a good brain for counting/invention so I expected that to play a part in the story but no he is just a passive observer.as for the girl whos dad died I did care about her since her side is full of assholes and neither she or her dad seemed to be against it + there is the presentation, I cared more for brown guys foster dad in arslan senki. I really want to like this show but it keeps failing me
