Utawarerumono 2 #02 — Stealth Giant Centipede

October 10th, 2015

I like how it only starts chittering after it made its entrance.

Impressions:

The tone of this episode was a complete disaster. Empty space, to comic relief, to sudden decapitation, back to more comic relief through the entire boss fight that was the second half of the episode. The dumb painted-face mage was a pox upon the entire affair and kept the whole thing from feeling like they were actually taking this seriously, especially when a guy had his head eaten off right in the middle of them and nobody gave even half a crap about it. Kuon especially was still th same chirpy can-do. Not that I'm saying I wanted them all to go into a guilt-driven angstfest, but if you're going to try for a shocking moment by messily biting off a head right in front of the protagonist, that bears a little more reaction than "I'm a spunky dog girl with a can do attitude!" and then about 30 seconds of reflection in the closing seconds. How exactly does a gigantic centipede even sneak up on two guys in the middle of a clearing in the middle of a party of a couple dozen people in the first place? While hte protagonist was looking in that direction. Was it wearing little booties on all its feet?

It was serviceable for the most part, but nothing particularly special, which still puts it above everything else I watched today. It still should've probably come last week and again, excised the stupid sniveling effeminate dumbcrap entirely. He did nothing but irritate every moment he was on screen. How funny, he fell in the bug goop. How funny, he's cowardly. How funny, he's cowardly and screaming. The CGI bugs and blobs haven't gotten any better either. The sooner we move away from mysterious CGI pulsating blob as a plot element, the better.

“Ok, everyone retreat, leave me with… hmm… the dog chick, the guy who couldn’t walk for 30 minutes without almost dying and the clown who is covered in shit, yep, flawless.”
And powerlevels are all over the place, you can cut a mountain but can’t cut the damn bug, sure.

This, easily, the best Anime airing right now. There are indeed mood issues but those can be easily ignored, so far, so good.
