Symphogear GX #06 — Maybe Try Grunting More

August 7th, 2015

Try rebooting it and going on an astral journey of self-discovery.

Impressions:

Not to repeat myself, but since it’s just going through the motions, I kind of feel like I’m obligated to as well. So here we are, six episodes in, and what have we accomplished? The protagonists have had a costume change to darker suits, although jury’s out as to whether or not they think that’s totally cool ’cause the power of darkness, or just because they already did white ones at the end of the first season. And what did they even do with it? Kill slightly more Noise than usual. And are now immune to the special Noise powers introduced like, three episodes ago. Oh, and then they oneshot the antagonist who then… magic-nuked herself, I guess? I guess we finally revealed that the antagonist has an adult form, complete with close-up of her fondling her breasts, in case anybody might have missed that. She has harps on her back. So, you know, there’s that. As if Tsubasa’s leg swords weren’t eye-rolling enough the eighty-seven-millionith time she kills a dozen Noise by doing and handstand and kicking in the world’s most clumsy and inefficient way.

It’d also really be in this show’s best interest to call as little attention to its writing as possible, especially when it enters pure padding mode to fill up the time with grunting, friendship power, and astral journeys, as was the name for a goddamned third of the episode and brought all tension to a total halt when the ‘tense’ attack by the antagonist includes a little bit of nappy time while the protagonists sort their crap out. Jesus, they explicitly called attention to it even. I already don’t like it any time a show cuts away from events to try to interject drama with some extended trip through time unrelated to events in progress, but the ones here were especially egregiously random. If you want to explore Tsubasa’s daddy and trust issues, or Chris’s wartorn past, then do it. It’s not connected to anything that’s happened yet, nor do I have even the slightest belief that they’ll be exploring it more in the future. Even better yet though, get the hell out of the past and focus on the current events instead of trying to retroactively shove things in and pretend like they always existed.

Sooo… they ended the last season with their God Cloths, and now they’re getting their Upgraded Bronze Cloths?
