The Rolling Girls #02 — World’s Slowest Rollercoaster

January 17th, 2015

No wonder Japanese theme parks are so unprofitable.

Impressions:

It hasn’t done much to change my initial thoughts that the fancy-pants visuals are going to be 90% of the ‘content’ here, and the two characters that drove these two episodes seemingly stepping out of the show at this point does not exactly excite. It picked up eventually, but it took the coaster nearly five minutes to reach the gap, and sentai girl spend almost the entire first third either glaring or getting dressed.

Which isn’t to say that it was smooth sailing from then on. They awkwardly tried to backload emotional impact into scenes… multiple times… by showing the emotional reaction first and then pulling up a flashback/flashback montage to the distant past to provide context, which is like starting a joke with the punchline. And then there was the amnesia angle whipped out of the ass. Yeesh. At least they didn’t dwell on it, but that made it no less dumb. You might even be able to mistake it for some kind of parody… if it wasn’t delivered with zero awareness of that.

Still, there were about 3-4 minutes in there of actual action, a rarity for this season, and a few decent enough sight gags, also a rarity, so I’m relatively confident that I’ll enjoy this more than either The Non-Adventures of Eggboy or Dinosaur Days. I just hope they’re going to actually do something with the wallpaper paste that makes up what we’ve seen of the actual protagonists so far.

Next Episode:

If you’re reading this, then I’ve forgotten to change the template.

2 Shouts From the Peanut Gallery

Well, i respect your Thoughts. But for me this Show is Entertainment pure. Perhaps it reminds me a bit of Kill la Kill storytelling. This Show do not take itself very seriously

    • Sanjuro says:

The art style really does make it seem a teeny bit like Kill la Kill but without the horrible Sawano sound track. Might be good, but I’m not sure, since I doubt we’ll see Crocodile again.
