Kokkuri-san #01 — Needs More Disco, Less Everything Else

And please stop trying to look realistic.
Impressions:
I guess this is what happens when you make your standard Japanese boke/tsukkomi humor (aka, all the punchlines are a gong/visual bang and yelling “What you have said is not a normal situation!”) but remove or subdue the vast majority of the gongs. Humor’s a subjective thing, but I can say that I didn’t laugh once at this episode. They had the inklings of some actual humor here and there, but instead of launching into, say, parody, they only seemed to get as far as “this is a lightsaber, I will explain that this is a lightsaber” and then called it a day. Or just drawn out until the punchline has long since died. I think the ED (OP?) may have been more fun than the other twenty minutes of the episode combined. It did disturb me a couple times when it tried to make the girl go to a more… I hesitate to call it realistic so let’s say “less comical” art style. That it did it while trying to be sentimental made it only all the more disturbing, especially at the end.
Production’s decent and expressive, jokes are varied and come at a decent enough clip, but they’re just not very good. “Ask me anything.” “Checking the internet is faster.” I appreciate the lack of a massive stinger for that normal conversation, but no matter what kind of silly faces you make, it’s not a joke either. It also has the problem typical of 4-panel adaptations that no effort at all was made to make it into a cohesive narrative, so it’s just a bunch of jokes slapped together. Bad jokes. Jokes that wouldn’t even be fit for a Snapple Cap.Â

Your aversion to empty cute things worries me. This doesn’t bode well for when you adopt me.
I sort of felt the same with the google joke, but cuteness trumps all. It even had face-pulling without the need for poor cgi models.
