Tokyo ESP #03 — The Real Penguinbusters
July 25th, 2014
 Â
You’re dead, Egon. Stop chasing penguins.
I need to take some people to the airport tomorrow morning, so The Adventures of Eggbot will be a little delayed.Â
Impressions:
Fairly lacking. The pieces were there, relatively standard but not obnoxious introduction to new character/penguin, people actually using their powers to play the hero, start planting the seeds for the mutant revolution or whatever, and then in the second half, bring in a set of yakuza making a power play with their newfound super powers, but I just wasn’t feeling it. I think it was mostly just how quickly and easily the protagonists were dispatched at the start of the second half, which is fine in itself, but then they spent the next ten minutes more or less hanging about and bitching about heroics, the one actual ‘fight’ happening completely off-screen. Then again, it could have also been Pyro hovering with his goofy flame hands and a gas can between his legs.
The plummeting animation budget also didn’t help. Maybe they were saving up the budget for the rescue next week, but I’m not hopeful. It was at its worst at the end, especially when Pyro boinged off a car hood. They could have really used some actual oomph there if they wanted to sell Azuma pushing the edge of the hero thing after his generic ravaged city past flashbacks in the room of bloody and batted thugs before kneecapping Pyro, but with the stills, boinging, and then comical spinning around to end it, the whole scene was a mess and it was hard to tell if that’s even what they were going for.
