Symphogear G #01 — Bagpipes and Vacuums

July 4th, 2013

Strange things are afoot.

Impressions:

Aaaaah. Now here’s the good stuff. Beginning with haunting singing, a scene of destruction, and blood pouring down the eyes and mouth, going straight from that into a massive Noise attack, straight into another Noise attack, and still having enough left in the tank for an actual cliffhanger with Gungnir and the new magical girl slash antagonist and not pissing about over the changes in the characters and events. And amazingly enough, I could follow it without having everything infodumped into my face either! I must be a superhuman! Well, overall pacing was rarely an issue for Symphogear, but it’s great to see them keeping up. Hopefully they can keep the plot from returning to "Moon BAD!" Or maybe make it a running joke that every antagonist hates the moon. I think I’m fine with either.

What wasn’t as good is that it looked like the animation and choreography in the action took a little bit of a hit. Not too major and given everything that happened in the episode between the fighting, concert, and attack at the end, it’s absolutely forgivable. The concert at the end of this episode also looked much better than the concert at the start of the first season with much less of that ugly rotoscoping or animation shortcuts. Wasn’t a huge fan of Hibiki’s new song, but I’ll live.

Aside from those few quibbles, I’d say it was a great first episode back. Let’s just hope they can keep it up instead of descending into moon madness or pissing around about the normies again.
