Blood Lad #01 — Interview With a Vampire
July 7th, 2013
Breaking the fourth wall is not a pass for self introduction exposition.
Impressions:
Actually kind of decent. Sure, it’s far too shouty in both audio and visuals, there’s too much direct exposition to the audience in lieu of more organic character development/introduction, and the female lead could be replaced by a breathy sack of jell-o and very little would change. There’s also this kind of weird disconnect in the eyecandy department where the camera and director are trying their best to whore her out while none of the characters could be the least bit interested in her giant breasts or barely covered crotch.
However, the artistic direction’s varied and used effectively to compliment the jokes (and is just as generally noisy as the audio instead of just reserved for punchlines), art’s nicely stylized, animation’s… sufficient, the jokes are constant, and the setup and plot cruises straight along. This one managed to get through its premise blurb in about ten minutes, a feat many shows this season couldn’t manage in a full twenty. And it managed to make a lot of jokes along the way. A lot of them don’t work particularly well, granted, but again, there’s enough variety and they don’t dwell on any too long for it to get annoying.
I’m guessing though is that they ripped right through through the source which is how they kept the story and jokes flowing. If they can keep up the same pace and show some of the neat action that the OP promises, it could be a pretty fun action comedy. If they slow things down much though, that could get real ugly real fast.

They actually put some effort into it. It still felt like they were making shit as they go.
