Mayo Chiki! #01 — Composers Tripping Balls

The music in this show is weird.

Impressions:

It felt so weird going from Im@s’s nada straight into a hip drop onto a crotch followed by a leg lock. Of course, then Generic Male Protagonist #4158 started narrating his life and normalcy was regained. I wonder if they all do that every morning. Wake up, remind themselves who they are and what their life is, and then go eat breakfast. I think that’s either a symptom of paranoia or megalomania. Well, considering that the world revolves around them and all female sternums seem inexplicably drawn to their faces like a magnetic force, perhaps it’s not so crazy.

The show’s fairly technically well-made at least. The music especially deserves some praise, although I question their use of Mary Has a Little Lamb. That doesn’t change the fact that it’s generic as all hell though. You might as well go down your harem checklist and mark things off. Energetic sister, combative tomboy, gothic mistress, giant breasted ditz, perverted male friend, and the One Protagonist Thick Enough to Rule Them All. He’s of the shouty variety instead of the personality-less variety and unfortunately has the habit of dragging down the rest of the show’s energy by being loud, irritating, and completely unamusing.

It’s not bad by any means, and I do feel the need to praise it for being visually energetic after most of the other shows today were anything but. At the end of the day though, it’s just another fairly unremarkable comedy with the same presentation and same jokes that these kinds have been using since before I was born. The execution may be a little better animated and have music that’ll give you a contact high, but unless you’ve somehow stumbled here straight from 1970, it’s nothing you haven’t seen a hundred times before.

Something about her arm size disturbs me.

That’s a pretty unique way of revealing a character’s gender… in the middle of a piss.

    • Aroduc says:

Actually, he didn’t figure it out then. He just realized that she was wearing panties and assumed she was a pervert. It wasn’t until he had his hand on her breast and pulled her pants down that he put two and two together and came up with something other than 8.

      • SeventhSette says:

I have to say, the man’s got talent. In however long it took him to fall down, he unbuttoned a vest, untucked a shirt, unbuttoned the same shirt, undid a belt, undid the pants, pulled them down, and still had enough time to grab her boob and reaction face.

        That’s skill, right there.

  • Chen says:

I choose violent tomboy! Wait, are there two of them? ‘Cause the twin-tailed gal at the back is looking a bit cross.

  • Nanaya says:

It’s paranoia, not megalomania. Don’t ask me how I know, but it involves seriously weighing the drawbacks and benefits of total world annihilation before obtaining coffee.

  • Wilfriback says:

Gothic sado-mistress is a fair reason to watch this.

  • Anonymous says:

Ohhh… this is the show with the reverse-trap. I was about to disregard it until I realized that.

  • Kaisos says:

    It’s not terrible.

  • The Phantom says:

This was a surprise, I was expecting this to be utter garbage but it ended beign pretty good. I liked it, the male lead was lame but the two girls esp. the twin tailed red eyed manipulative biatch were pretty good. Looking forward to more of this.

  • Aex says:

I’d say there’s potential, although every girl falling in love with Subaru (cross-dresser) and probably hating Jirou (main-guy) is going to be an interesting twist that sounds a little annoying.

Aroduc, you truly are a master of making fun of the generic anime templates. I’m haven’t seen anyone who can describe such a boring and stereotypical anime setting in a way to bring out gut busting laughter! Go Aroduc!!!
