Countless Cat Gods #01 — Ruled By Nintendo
July 8th, 2011
I don’t remember those games.
Impressions:
This was… eh. I’m a bigger fan of shows with energy and not hammering plot and characters over the audience’s head than anybody, but this was a little too far in the other direction. I don’t think the show manages to go two minutes without a new character showing up without ever really giving a solid introduction to almost any of them. There can be a balance between one protagonist spending 10 minutes narrating what’s happening three feet in front of his face and 10 characters snapping in and out of the show like they’re on bungee cords. Let’s try to find that.
AIC+ did a decent job on the production at least, although I don’t think they have a good handle on chemistry between the visuals and the writing yet, particularly concerning Mayu, which is particularly unfortunate because she’s the centerpiece of the show. I’m not sure if they need to speed up the joke delivery more, or slow down and let the characters interact better, but it’s definitely missing the same kind of charm and wit that AIC+’s last show with this staff (GA Art Class) had. The visuals and the writing need to get on the same page to deliver some punches instead of just being kind of watered down the whole way through.
In any case, it’s harmless. I was hoping for something a lot better given its pedigree, but since it airs all by its lonesome on Friday evenings after I’m stuffed with dinner, it was probably a foregone conclusion from the start. I think that between Bakatest, Yuruyuri, and Mayo Chiki though, this episode didn’t make a particularly strong case for being one of top comedies of the season.
