My Little Sister Can’t Be This Badly Directed #03 — Timing

October 17th, 2010

This show just pitched a lot of things right into a brick wall.

Impressions:

As seems to often be the case lately, no sooner do I criticisize a show for doing something poorly than another show comes along to obliterate the previous one’s low standards. The drama in this direction was insulting badly done with the most trite and predictable resolution possible. I guess I shouldn’t expect much from melodrama introduced and resoved within a 9 minute span, but this was just horrendously poorly handled in every way, from Kyousuke spending the entire thing shrieking to Kirino’s godawful corny "I love them so so so so so so so much and they’re a part of meeeeeeee" speech. It’s not like the first half of the episode was amusing either. What little animation and parody cleverness the show had from last week was gone to make way for an endless parade of heads talking on phones. Because if there’s nothing less interesting than talking heads, it’s talking head. Actually, ew.

The music was the worst part by far. The dark and dramatic piece starts up, then suddenly the Can Can for a gag, then sad Mexican guitars. The we get into some kind of bloody war march for Kyousuke’s confrontation with daddy dearest about finding Kirino with her incest porn. Plus, since it’s the big moment where Kyousuke turns everything around and obviously lies, let’s toss in a gag. Now seems like a good time for a half-assed VN joke. Why not? And then… AND THEN, just to add insult to injury, the episode ended with Kyousuke shouting "MY LITTLE SISTER CAN’T BE THIS CUTE!" as they cut to the ED with the OP playing. If my laptop weren’t already falling to pieces as it is, I would have tried to throttle the screen. I guess the upside is that they can go off on their silly adventure to Comiket now! Whoopie doo.

Ah yes, and Kirino’s puke blue nail polish was ghastly. Because that’s also important to note.

  • Chen says:

Aroduc wishes his sister was this cute.

    • Aroduc says:

My sister once accidentally posted a photo of herself drunk, topless, and covered in vomit to the family’s photo album.

So yeah, sure. It’d be nice.

  • Mesousa says:

I’m guessing SHAFT was involved in this one.

  • Anonymous says:

Sounds like this episode didn’t blow over well, still covering it or you going to toss it?

  • rufe says:

Ew…that hurt. They gave Nakamura waay too little time to deliver his poorly written lines >_<

I thought that showing the father's emotions surrounding his daughter was cute. I also loved the R-18 part ("In this…dad's argument is super logical"). Actually, I thought that part was better delivered than the manga.

And the laughable lie at the end ("so, you borrow your sisters computer and play a game where you do inappropriate things to your sister in your sisters room…with your sister?") was…laughable….literally.

  • Red says:

The lie made me laugh at first, and then I tried to understand it and got confused.

  • Avisch says:

    I thought it was good.

I think the show’s music was something to brag about to begin with, but I don’t care cause I don’t have expectations for anime BGM music to begin with.

“I love them so so so so so so so much and they’re a part of meeeeeeee”

I will agree here though, there wasn’t anything worth mentioning here.

  • RaiKitsune says:

I am still holding out hope that this will get much better.

  • Outer Space says:

Eh, the episode was good for me. The only flaw that I can see is how all this drama can be as early as episode three.

Whoa, I kinda rhymed back there.

  • Solaris says:

This show has the worse and most illogical premise i’d ever seen in tons of illogical animes.

I watched women fall in love with men as worthwile as worm parasites and that was ok
I watched airplane girls playing cheerfully fondling tits each other instead of fighting and that was ok.
I watched tons of brats on board of mechas, easier to pilot than any bicycle, saving the day when mighty armies were powerless and that was ok.

But an imouto fond of imouto porn is just … LoL

PS: It’s better they stick with otaku subculture portrayal instead of trying to go along that failing premise…

  • anonymous says:

My Little Sister Can’t Be This Horrible Characterized! Ugh this show is just the worst thing honestly. Decent production values help attract attention, but it’s so blatantly clear that the whole thing is built around the premise of:

    a) trying to reassure otaku about their hobbies
    b) pushing this Kirino character on people as the next big moe idol and
    c) implying that if they’re parents try to get in the way of enjoying “the product” well then fuck em’ I guess.

It’s absurd that people are calling this anything approaching realistic or acting like it has some sort of merit with it’s bland characters and cheap plays for the emotional involvement of the target audience. Spare me! What we he have here in “My Little Sister Can’t Be This Cute” is the latest hit moe show with it’s perfectly constructed little sister character to be idolized by the masses and fan artists in the scene and little more…it’s just that that happens to be what people are calling well written and above par these days.

    • SlashZero says:

      Welcome to anime.

Perhaps you would find these shows with completely ordinary premises that don’t align with target audience tastes more enjoyable:

      …Oh wait.

  • alex says:

they should just fill those episodes with goth loli and everything would be alright – “my goth loli sister can’t be this cute” :)

  • OverMaster says:

Now I’ll agree on THIS show feeling forced and bad.
