A Certain Magical Index II #14 — Curse of the Black Pearl
January 14th, 2011
A giant glowing ship? That’s subtle.
Impressions:
This arc got weird fast. And that’s setting the baseline for normalcy at Touma winning a trip to Italy, running into Orsola, and then helping Amakusa pack and move random stuff. Well, at least they got past the obligatory awkward introduction part of every arc where Touma putzes around in his daily life while complaining about his bad luck in only 17 minutes. I think that the dude might actually be getting thicker as time goes on. He’s presented with the diabolical puzzle of two closed doors, one of which containing a naked girl in a shower. How does he solve this puzzle? Not by knocking. Knocking would be rude. He just charges in and his excitement turns to horror when he gets full frontal nun. Of course, there’s also the alternate theory that he was trying to walk in on Index and is just terrified of breasts. It’s a question best left to the scholars.
Anyway, that’s about when the episode turns particularly weird. Assassins come after Orsola, and their initial attempt failed, they summon a giant glowing blue boat in the middle of the city. Apparently Italy cares less about keeping magic a secret than Academy City. The boat then destroys everything in its path so it can head out to sea with the rest of the fleet of ghost ships popping up from underwater. Touma then ruins any overtures of tension in the scene where they’re discovered by doing slapstick. Yeah… there’s going to be some nasty nasty exposition coming up to explain all this next week.
Preview:
I wonder if they’re going to explain what happened to Kugyu’s clothes.
