The Dawn of Amaneka and The Deep Blue God — Brief First Impressions

June 1st, 2008

Let’s go for super brief here.

I hate the uninterruptable controls, I hate how fragile Amaneka is, I hate the controls in general, I hate how slow you move on the overworld map, I hate the controls, I hate the flighty combat system (seriously, Ougi got stuck on a corner and a bat nearly beat him to death before I noticed), I hate that I’ve gone through three or four dungeons and I’m still having Amaneka’s ass kicked by bats, and I hate the controls.

Amaneka is your stereotypical slightly egomaniacal treasure hunter, one of eight billion Lina Inverse knockoffs with her muscular sidekick, so it’s not even being particularly creative. It’s not visually exciting, what passes for ‘dungeon exploration’ is slow an uninteresting, punctuated by brief moments of terror when a bat aims for Amaneka and the thought of having to replay everything you’ve done so far springs into mind, and have I mentioned that the controls suck yet? They have all the grace and civility of menu-based Diablo combat. There is only one way to interact here. There is only one thing you would want to do with a pot; smash it. Why the hell do I have to call up a menu for that? You can’t even control combat, everybody just fires their crap when you get close… but to move? That requires three clicks, and then you can’t change your movement until you get to your destination. Come on, Kogado, this is just terrible game design. You know better than this.

And no, it’s not accessible at all if you don’t have at least a pretty decent grasp of written Japanese.

Amaneka Gameplay

So, in short, I’ll concede that I’ve only played around for maybe a couple hours at most, but it certainly has not been the best couple of hours that I’ve ever spent. If the controls were less stupid and actually contextual, it’d be far more entertaining. I don’t think this’ll go down as one of Kogado’s better games though.

Blargh. I guess it wasn’t good enough for you, huh? Sorry, if anything. :3

On the other hand, Co2A’s art beckons.

  • Who is the voice of Amaneka in the first video? Seems as if I should recognize it.

  • Keion says:

you’re right…this game has horrible control style.
i just put Mogi on the front so Amaneka wouldn’t die.
and there doesn’t seem to be a way to level them…
and everyones super weak besides Mogi and the robot >.<
