A Certain Magical Index II #09 — Running Man

Why is there suddenly so much running in this show?

Impressions:

Another decent, if somewhat unambitious episode. The plot remains on about the depth of thought as an 1860 Georgia lynch mob, but it helps things move along at a better clip than usual. Don’t be mistaken, they still have time to take random 5 minute smoke breaks for Styl so Tsuchi can explain how mages are like this, but wizards are like this, not to mention browbeat Touma about how they’re putting their lives on the line, but they are doing a decent job of keeping that stuff short and to the relative point instead of consuming great swathes of the episode at a time. Plus, it’s amusing to watch Touma be used as kind of a mobile shield. It just goes to show what someone competent could do if they had his power.

So anyway, this week didn’t really add much to the plot of… "A sorceress… get her!" but at least Touma got to swat away half a dozen beams and save some random girl. And now because Watermelon Chest is involved, it’s personal. Or something. That scene with Mikoto did turn from cute to annoying pretty quickly though. Is "that pole is dangerous, step away from it" really so hard to say? No, dude. Make indistinct and easily misunderstood claims about not wanting her to get hurt in the middle of a battlefield with crap flying everywhere. You didn’t even have the bloody right pole. Once again, I state that Touma’s not actually attractive to any of these girls, they simply cannot escape the sheer gravitational pull of the dense core of iron he has in place of a brain.

Preview:

Don’t try to think, Touma. Just punch her and call it a day. Which her? Any her.

I got the feeling you are starting to like this… anyway keep in mind this arc is a sort of continuous hide and seek game, so there’s not a deep plot till the end of it. Touma is “just” busy with protecting people, catch booby mages and, on the top of all, manage things with family, Index and Mikoto and her bastu game.

  • Seren says:

Mikoto is always like that, such cliche character like Louise, Taiga, etc. Nothing interesting to aport.

I enjoyed the pursuit but more enjoyed Tsuchi’s antics.

  • Nanaya says:

    Ahahahahah

It just goes to show what someone competent could do if they had his power.

That line is hilarious in the later volumes, because theres a plot point thats the exact opposite of it. Turns out most people couldn’t pull off that ability against someone competent.

judging from her expression “pole” could have some other meanings in Japanese…

Why is there suddenly so much running in this show?

    A certain unlucky runner?

I wonder if Mikoto will join the party next week…

  • Aex says:

Gods Arudoc, I agree 100% on Touma this week. “It’s dangerous!” “Come over here!” “I don’t want you to get hurt!” He said everything EXCEPT “Get away from that pole!”. I also loved how people had to keep TELLING him to use Imagine Breaker when it’s painfully (lol pun) obvious he should be blocking the magical wave or using it to save the person. Sure he’s dense, but it was just ridiculous this week!

On the plus side, looks like we get to see Mikoto’s mother have a little fun at her daughter’s expense next week! I’m looking forward to seeing how red she can get Mikoto about Touma.

You have just said that this only a run and run episode…

I think Touma’s chick magnet was again activated.

  • Longhaul says:

“And now because Watermelon Chest is involved, it’s personal.”

    Just wait for Himegami’s turn.

  • The Phantom says:

“Touma. Just punch her and call it a day”

My very exact thoughts, punch her already, just leave her unconscious. We know accelerator will show up later to finish the job :D

  • Rednal says:

Eh, personally, I suspect the explanation that the girls he touches with his right hand have their own fate severed (seems to have worked on Touma himself…), so their red string latches onto him instead. XD

Also, Misaka’s contrary enough to touch something just because she was told not to, yeah?
