The Ruler of Nabari #07 — Engrish 101

May 19th, 2008

To be fair, the worst thing was the name.

Impressions:

Sorry to do this, but I’m exhausted. Thankfully, my connecting flight was delayed by 1.5 hours, which matched well since I had a 1 hour layover… and my first flight was delayed by 2 hours. Thanks, Philly. I don’t know whether to hate you or to hate USAirways. So now I’m awake enough to watch things, but probably not enough to form particularly coherant thoughts.

Anyway, I’m exhausted and this was another expositiontastic episode and the encoding was horrendously poor, so my enthusiasm for summarizing was about nil after 2-3 minutes in. To be fair, it was more interesting than last week’s since this is leading to fighting and whatnot instead of Yoite x Miharu slash fanfiction.

The party gets a visit from one of the ninja clans, but they’ve more or less given up being ninjas to the point where they hang out in an office building and refer to their leader as the President. However, they (well, their leader, Yae) still use their technique to read people’s hearts and manipulate them in that manner. Not really ninja-y, but I guess it has its uses. Yae pokes at the Banten 4 in various ways to force them to along with her general whims on how to deal with the Ash Wolves, which in this case is to assassinate one of their high mucky mucks and general all-around rich douchebag, Mr Frosty (what a name). Well, she did make the mistake of looking into Miharu a little too deeply and coming face to face with the pissed off All-Nature.

Yae would have been more interesting if she and her group were less silly and more evil, or at least morally ambiguous. Since her ‘clan’ is pretty much completely inept without her (or at least, her bodyguard Kato is a bumbling fool), she doesn’t come across as even a fraction as threatening as the Fuuma group, especially when she defeats herself by probing into Miharu. Speaking of the Fuuma, Raimei got called away by them partway through on some news of Raikou. Miharu gave her permission to leave him, but got all impish in the process as well. I wish I could say something funny about the English that Mr Frosty and his buddies used, but it was pretty decent aside from the extremely thick Japanese accent. It was also only about 10 lines, so they could only screw it up so much. Still, it was certainly better than… say… Black Lagoon’s Engrish… or ALART!

Thankfully, the episode ends with Kumohira beating down some chump security guard as they start their attack on Mr Frosty. Yoite is also lurking somewhere in the building and the promo features explosions, bloodshed, and Yoite looking like someone just killed his pet parakeet, so we should finally finally FINALLY get our long overdue return to the action.

Preview:

Like I said, the encode I got was horrible and I didn’t feel like transcoding it to take a couple extra caps. You’ll just have to take my word that there’s crazy Yoite and explosions.

  • […] Kotori and School Rumble’s Yakumo also using forbidden ninja techniques? Agree with Aroduc that would have been more interesting if Yae and company were more ambiguous like Fuuma but then […]
