Shakugan no Shana S #04 — Revenge of the Bubble Beast

September 28th, 2010

"Watch out, he’s slowly blowing bubbles in this general direction!"

Impressions:

A disappointing end to the series and to Junko’s little arc. The first episode was the only episode of this whole OVA bunch that I think I really enjoyed, but they spent a significant chunk of this episode in flashbacks to before it happened and I’m really not sure why. To let her say goodbye to her boyfriend? We’re just ignoring her mom though apparently. It was just heavy handed and dumb, and certainly not helped by an insert song and montage literally 2.5 minutes into the episode. Why would you do that, JC Staff? This entire sequence was unnecessary to begin with, but a montage already? At least they didn’t use the OP for once.

The Denizen ‘fight’ (to be charitable with the term) was also extremely poor. I sort of tune out of generic "I’m evil and this is how I’m evil" talking heads anyway, but I could barely even understand the damn bubble monster through the massive distortion effect that they were using. Also, it was a monster made out of bubbles of photographs. It only even tried to attack Shana once, by slowly blowing some bubbles in her direction. When you’re a person eating monster hunted by superpowered little girls and maids, one would expect you to be have some kind of ability that cannot be defeated by a stiff breeze. But no, then it got stabbed and was dead. And that was that. Game over. See ya later, Junko. Let’s play some sad music to make sure that you know now is when you’re supposed to cry. Okay, that taken care of? It’s a wrap. Toss in a bunch of quick shots from season one and two and call it a day.

Bleh.

Maybe after Railgun II, which was annonced a days ago for the 2011… ouch, my head still hurts…more original episodes?

  • Tareq says:

well…. the third season was confirmed in 2009 and JC STAFF Said that the third season will Start After the the 4th Ova in 2010
Now the 4th ova is aired, so i think the third season will start verry soon and i think it will be in 2010 not 2011
    i hope so

Hahaha that’s Aroduc for you. I actually enjoyed this ep. The flashback scene was an attempt build sympathy for the torch and try to get you to care about the characters involved more. It worked well on me, but some people are just desensitized to key-like emotional manipulation. I have to admit the “fight” wasn’t really a fight, but they spend two whole ova’s building up how weak and unnoticeable this Tomagara would be, so what’d you expect? Being stealthy was his only defense, and it was pretty effective seeing as he survived for 10 years+.

I feel little to nothing for a character that they spent fewer than 10 minutes developing.

Interesting. I for one found the final two episodes rather enjoyable if sad. I knew Junko was screwed from the moment she appeared in episode 3 and the way Shana removed her Torch existence was pretty horrifying if you ask me. In the current storyline, we forget that Shana has taken over the existence of someone else. In the OVA, that’s not the case as we are continuously reminded that she has taken over Junko’s existence and thus when Shana leaves, there’s a hole that’s left behind.

The final scene after the end credits were the most interesting of all though because of the set up for a new TV series.
