High School of the Dead #09 — Grope of Epiphany

August 30th, 2010

I like how the other one is trying to flee.

Impressions:

Apparently Saeko was killed by the zombies last week and they introduced her identical twin off screen, because this character and the one seen in the last eight episodes have practically nothing in common. She was prancing around without pants not two episodes ago without caring. Now she’s ashamed to be seen slightly wet? What? Did I miss a memo somewhere? That said, this was easily the least T&A-full episode of this show to date. Sure, that means that there aren’t quite as many talking points as last week, but I consider it a win for good taste. A shame that didn’t mean better animation though. I guess it was about average, but every single action scene was plagued with bad stills every 5 seconds.

Unfortunately though, that meant a return to the insultingly bad writing. After picking up their awesome little ATV, the first thing Takashi does is drive it into the river, wait until night, then drive it through zombies while they can barely see, before abandoning it in a fountain so they can continue on foot. Is the value of running over zombies lost on them? Remember way back when in episode 2 when they learned the zombies ignore them if they don’t make a lot of noise? What ever happened to that strategy? Saeko then has a sudden attack of angst from child zombies that would have been more compelling if A.) It hadn’t been introduced and resolved within a four minute span, most of which was stills with her giving a voice over and B.) Not solved by being violently groped. Also, it’s heavily implied that they kissed after their mutual confession of being sadistic. I thought kisses were supposed to resolve all Japanese feminine angst. Have you been lying to me all these years, Japan?

14 Shouts From the Peanut Gallery

  • Hayate says:

Gah, it’s a freaking deviation! And it even attempts to bullshit the reunion of the group by devianting further before reaching that house!

-yells into a wind fan carried by some dude-

    ONORE MADOHAOUSUUUUUUUUUUUUU!!!!!!

  • sora says:

you know, i would have to say this was a very good episode besides takashi smushing saeko’s tit like dough (by the way, i have a feeling takashi will be a pimp by the end of the series) onward to the next episode!!!

  • demonic apostle says:

    WTF???

  • Aex says:

Well, the kiss was a welcome add-on to the original stuff from the manga, very welcome indeed! Of course, that was offset by the anime making the tit-grab-confession-thingy WAY more awkward looking. In the manga he was already behind her, so that’s a lot better then somehow running behind her so he can grab her from the back… yeah… The ATV coming out of nowhere also felt weird too. Still, a Saeko episode is a good thing for me!

  • Sporklord says:

I understand they are trying to add a little depth to Saeko’s character, but I’m not really sure being sadistic is much of a character flaw/trait in a world that is suddenly populated by an near endless supply of zombies for her to chop up guilt free.

Also, zombies really need to pick up the slack. They haven’t been a real threat in like 2 episodes.

    • Aroduc says:

They weren’t much of a threat when he was walking at their eye level with a child peeing on him either.

  • shadow says:

then a good anime here is only : nude, fanservice , harem
breast, ass…. is a good anime for teens.

  • Anonymous says:

there was implied sex in this episode?

    • sora says:

I was thinking the same thing too!!! There is no way that Takashi and Saeko would just kiss and leave it like that… all night!!! And besides she didn’t seem too concern with him groping her either…

  • arknoir says:

Didn’t the mature looking lolita, mercy kill a student by bopping him over the head with the wooden equalizer in episode 1 without a moment’s hesitation?? The RSPCC must of got to her then.

  • RaiKitsune says:

I’m assuming they did do it since that is how I would write the hero and that is what I choose to believe although I know we will never find out. Also, Saeko is the best of all the women so good job mate.

  • ubu roi says:

Every time I think this show has found its level, it finds a new depth to plumb. Maybe that’s why I enjoy it so.

Madhouse really understands my demographic…perpetually lost in a universe of B-grade Roger Corman films, only with sex.

  • brixter says:

Why would the they plot something like that? They have kissed but didn’t have sex? People are dying and everything for god sake!

Honestly, I have no faith in this series. If you want more realistic and much better series tune in @ The Walking Dead.
