High School of the Dead #03 — Mr. Popularity

July 19th, 2010

Even for this show, that was a pretty awful bit of writing.

WordPress ate the first paragraph of my post somehow. I don’t even know how that could happen in the first place. Ugh.

Impressions:

Much of my enjoyment of this show at this point comes from philosophizing about the many inane things it does. How did the news have a copter above the White House as the President was evacuating… 20 feet away from the copter no less? Why are the zombies totally blind until somebody makes any noise anywhere, at which point they immediately set upon all humans, and only humans? Why was that kid Shidou threw to the wolves carrying textbooks in the middle of a zombie apocalypse? How did nobody notice Shidou stomping said kid’s face in when they were all yelling at him to get to the bus? Even Plato might be stumped by some of them.

That part in particular was just terrible. They make it a point to show Rei tunnel-visioned on him, and then he stomps a kid, basically kills him, makes a speech and dramatic pose, and walks away sneering. Keep in mind that everybody was waiting for him to get to the bus to leave. So it makes perfect sense for nobody to bring it up and for him to be voted Coolest Kid on the Block all of three minutes later by a majority of students fabricated just to add in some drama. The writing is really interfering more than it should for a show that has no actual plot. They really need to settle down and pick some rules for the zombies at the very least. There’s a low baseline to keep the writing sufficient, but the show’s really not meeting it. The CG van plowing down CG zombies didn’t help either. That was just the epitome of tacky.

To the show’s credit, at least it’s continuing to tone down the T&A, although next week, apparently the Road Warrior and his wench end up groped by some random punk. It was nice while it lasted.

Edit: Occult Academy’s (awful) third episode was already leaked/covered earlier this week, so no post about it tomorrow. I’ll probably think of something to post in the 72 intervening hours before Ookami, but… *shrug*

  • The Deviant says:

This only proves Zombies can ignore you.

  • amyable says:

Please, for the love of God, please tell me they left in the Shawn of the Dead cameo.

  • TOKWA says:

    Thing are getting S-L-O-W-L-Y…

  • Nanaya says:

I’m just waiting for the part where he splits up with sword-girl (can never remember the names) for a diversion and she goes full-blown sadist. One of the more amusing parts of the series, if you ask me (*they end up in water again* “do you like making girls wet?”).

Otherwise, they’re dragging this out too much for my tastes, probably because of the lack of source material.

    • Aex says:

That probably won’t be this season if they go by the manga plot. At this rate, I’ll be amazed if they make it to escaping from Saya’s house. But I agree, that is one of the best moments yet. Saeko is so friggen hott.

  • Sporklord says:

I like to fill in the inconsistencies with my own imagination.

Nobody saw Shidou stomp that kid? Too busy asking Tits Mcgee why she stopped making rubber noises.

Why drive like a lunatic against slow zombies where your only real threat is flipping the bus and killing yourself? Boobs drooping on the gas pedal.

  • Sterling01 says:

Have you watched the Zettai Karen OVA yet?

    • Aroduc says:

Well, I CERTAINLY DIDN’T TOTALLY FORGET ABOUT IT, if that’s what you’re implying.

      Uh.

      -shifty eyes-

  • Aex says:

Wow, they really drew out Shidou stomping that kid to all hell for the anime. In the manga he just stomps him and keeps running before the students got to the bus, instead of stomping him, waiting for the zombies to eat him, then WALKING away. Stupid. And don’t even get me started with that scene from in front of the lockers. That was just ridiculous. They keep making these little changes to the anime that make unrealistic situations even worse.

The only thing this episode had going for it was the action and that it was 99% true to the manga. We’re nearly through the initial boring crap though.

  • Silentbrick says:

This is sort of a general question, since I can see why police might have trouble with zombies, but um…how would zombies attack military people in tanks and AFV’s? I don’t think you can throw enough zombies at a tank to do more than maybe make it throw a track from running them over.

Anyway, if the zombies are attracted by sound, they should all have a bag of rocks or something to cause distractions with.

  • The Phantom says:

Cool episode, so long they keep up the violence and get rid of fanservice this one will remain on the top of my list this season, and I dunno why you complain about terrible writing, every single show of this season has many plotholes anyway, at least this one is fun and bloody.

  • Pozzy says:

zombie apocolypse never makes sense. just roll with it and enjoy the T&A.

anime sure is drawing out some screen time though… manga felt quite a bit faster than this.

also LOVED the sotd reference. thought that was hilarious in the manga too bahahhaha.

  • wolfie says:

The SoTD reference was just for zombie movie fans. Shame he didn’t whack the zombie in the straw hat. BTW, the reason tanks/APC’s aren’t such a good idea against zombies… if over so many start crowding it, they’ll litterally tear the armor plating right off. or, it’d run out of gas, and the EMP would knock it out. No targeting, no cannon. As for the military.. trained for body shots. Think the guy you shot 350 times is dead? think again. Wish they’d speed the anime up a bit more. Wish they’d release dubbed, too =/

  • Yuuli says:
