H2O ~Footprints the Sand~ #01 — Rock and Soul

January 3rd, 2008

Don’t let anybody fool you — the ‘girl’ with purple hair and a bow isn’t.

Impressions:

This wasn’t really that horrible, but it’s a far cry from being particularly watchable either. The animation and art is fine, when they exist. The show has a tendency to show random shows of the scenery instead of people during conversations. The art is mostly alright, but not great, though the characters themselves seem a little inconsistently drawn. The guys in particular morph around pretty haphazardly.

What really stood out to me was the simply awful background music. It starts out poor and never improves. It’s just obtrusive and irritating. They also cut it out and have long, awkward moments of total silence a few times, such as the classroom introduction scene. It kicked in a little later with something I’d expect from a sci-fi thriller. I half expected aliens to pop out of someone’s chest, not some schoolgirl fight over food.

I still don’t understand the point of fanservice around a blind guy. Outside of the trap, they’re all girls. Who cares about panty flashes or the like? What is even the point? It’s like they’re going through the motions to make sure people remember the porn game roots, but aren’t actually quite sure why.

I guess my final thoughts after one episode is that it’s a fairly uninteresting show. The BGM is by far the worst part, but it doesn’t really excel at much of anything either. It just seems a little too caught up in itself and overdramatic, which I guess is what I should have been expecting since my soul was supposed to be rocked. Still, it might pick up, but I wouldn’t bet on it. I think the sponsor screen with the scary scary dancing horseheaded men was probably the high point. Seriously, that may not have rocked my soul, but if those things attacked me in a dark alley, I’d certainly wet my pants.

  • Sensei-kun says:

I bet the guy is just faking and is having a grope-fest xD

  • Calawain says:

Well if your soul has not been rocked I guess I can avoid this one. Tis a shame.

  • Kresnik says:

Well, is the horsemen make their appearance..? Cause that’s sure to at least rock our soul.

  • sage says:

I have had dibs on Hamaji since almost a year and a half ago.

    Just saying.

  • Shinji103 says:

In all honesty, the slugging-a-girl part actually has me sold on this show. None of that “I can’t hit a girl!” sexist crap. Seriously, if a guy were to give me reason to slug him (which I have yet to do, fyi :P ), I’d be likely slug a girl all the same for the same reasons.

I mean, it’s basically the same thing as if you were fighting against Yoruichi in Bleach. Would you not hit her just becase she’s a woman? Same principle.

  • Fallen Aizen says:

Which girl with purple hair and a bow? I don’t see anyone like that :o

  • Owaranai Destiny says:

I felt somewhat lost while watching this. What’s with Otoha?

A possible connection between Hinata and Hirose will come up in the future, so while there are some pretty poor points in the show, such as bits and pieces of randomness and the BGM, it just might develop well enough to end up decent or above average.

And fanservice isn’t really just for the male leads. It’s for the viewers, thus “fan”service. XD

  • Silver says:

    @ shinji

A girl fighting you and you fight back is something that happens of course. Beating a girl although she’s not fighting back at all is a different thing. It’s like shooting and unarmed person when they are actually doing nothing.
