Hidamari Sketch ×☆☆☆ #05 — Fitness and Witless

February 4th, 2010

Every day is apparently an adventure for Yuno.

Impressions:

Even by Hidamari standards, this was a very dull episode. Yuno is not a particularly strong character on her own, and spending the last third of it on her interacting with possibly the most generic looking girl I have ever seen just made things worse. The two accidentally got their cell phones switched and Yuno may as well have fallen at her feet and started slavering because the girl can sketch well. I guess. They’re in a bloody art program. Yuno must practically wet herself damn near every day if that’s how excited she gets over seeing someone sketching an apple.

The first part was a little bit better, but I’d still have to say that the most interesting part of it was seeing that Nazuna is apparently supposed to be spelled Nazna. That sounds like some ancient Mayan drawing that you’d find on the side of a cliff. Otherwise, it was pretty much just the same set of jokes that you see whenever a show decides to bust out these health bits. I’ve seen them a hundred times before and this one was nothing new or different in any way. Now, if Miyako had spent the entire thing in pirate or Yagyuu Jubei mode…

4 Shouts From the Peanut Gallery

Sounds like they changed the story, if it goes the way you suggested… since Arisawa-senpai was supposed to have found Yuno’s cell phone which was left in that art lab, and then Yuno asked why Arisawa-senpai was going onto an art college after the fact.

I see they left the sexual harassment bit by Yoshinoya-sensei in, though.

I could have been mistaken. Would be far from the first time. I was in a little bit of a rush to finish before I had to get off to class so was eating lunch and printing handouts while I was watching. Yuno whipped out a phone with a neato super cool new design and then they went into the whole “Uh, where’s your phone” deal. That’s all I really remember at this point.

This show needs more Hiro and Yoshinoya episodes.

  • Haesslich says:

Aroduc: Well, the original joke was that Yuno lost the phone which had a picture she wanted to show off… and then she runs into a senior who’s decided to go on to art college because she felt inspired by what the students there were creating, which pushed her to do better… and this took place BEFORE Yuno and Miyako went onto their Junior year. So, timeskip again… unless they screwed around with the story, which is SHAFT’s usual modus operandii.

She may be generic, but the whole phone-email thing was to set up for a future appearance since the mangaka and the audience seemed to like Arisawa-senpai for being indecisive (and less flat) than Sae. Oh, and that whole ‘oh geez, they’re blushing a lot around each other’ thing.

Not that Yuno doesn’t get her moments with Miyako later; one strip has Nazuna and Nori basically doing the ‘ooh, those are big’ thing, and Yuno looks almost like she wants to join in. Also, I loved how everyone responded to Yoshinoya-sensei going ‘you’ve grown right here’ and pointing to Yuno’s heart but thought she was fonding her boobs…
