Mmmm…. bloody.

Jeez…. go to sleep early one day and all sorts of craziness breaks loose. I think I may just skip Rental Magica this week as it’s already been subbed… twice. Just go watch it. There’s not need to see my opinions on it.

Impressions:

AYAKASHI is actually the first show of the new Winter season. The first two episodes aired in a special yesterday, but it’s not actually going to start airing (starting again with the first episodes) until December 12th. In short, there aren’t going to be any new episodes of this until after Christmas.

The premise itself is something we’ve seen a few times before. People have magical powers and have monsters living inside them that extract their own price for using them. The main character, Kusaka Yuu, has (at least seemingly for now) a somewhat different power, low level telekinetics, and uses it to bend spoons to entertain his classmates.

Unfortunately, Kusaka is something of a douchebag. He’s extremely passive and very much a coward. The first episode also barely touches on the Ayakashi monsters at all except for the very end where the villain uses a tiny one to literally slice the nose off some mobster punk. There was a little bit at the start with the girl in Yusaka’s visions, but the rest of the episode was just an introduction to Yusaka’s school life.

Thumbing briefly through the second episode, it looks like a lot of the same until the 15 minute mark. I guess that I’ve got nothing better to do this evening than to check it out. I’ll withhold my final verdict until then. The second ep certainly looks very very bloody… and that’s coming after a first episode involving a nose being sliced off with a magical boxcutter.

If I had to make a decree after one episode, it’d be "borderline." There’s absolutely nothing that wowed me or drew me in and they did a very poor job of selling the premise. Luckily, there’s a second episode right here so I can get a better idea what they’re trying to do with this one… later tonight.
