Fairy Tail #01 — Oh Yeah!

October 12th, 2009

The Kool-ade man would have been a welcome respite.

Season Premier Disclaimer:

I like to check almost every new show out. The value of a show is in its execution, not its premise. That said, my tastes are mine and mine alone. Some things bother me, some things don’t. I will attempt to be as cogent as possible as to my complaints or compliments for each show, but be aware that my views skew heavily towards the center. Nothing is perfect, nothing is irredeemable. That said, my tastes and my opinions are mine and mine alone and should not be construed as fact or, god help us, some kind of erudite critical analysis of the entire series based on the show’s first 20 minutes. Feel free to leave your own thoughts on the show if you’d like, but invective and similar will be mocked or deleted depending on which amuses me more at the time.

Impressions:

They’re certainly not making any illusions about who this is being aimed at. Between the cute little mascot character, half of the music that would be right at home in Loony Tunes (although most of the serious/action themes were pretty good), and the jokes that are pitched so hard that some of them physically hurt me, I can already see envision a legion of irritating 10 year olds watching this on Cartoon Network within two years. What is it about Japanese kid humor that requires some person screaming after every single joke? Can’t they just install a giant buzzer to go off to alert people? It’d have the same effect and probably be less irritating that listening to certain VAs shout at you constantly. One should never long for the subtlety and poise of Animaniacs, but here we are.

Surprisingly, Hirano Aya’s shriek wasn’t the most irritating thing about this episode. The animation was far more offensive. It was lacking at best and occasionally offensively at worst. It’s got everything, inconsistent framerate, unsynced vocals, random abuse of speedlines, stills, and some really inanely bad visual effects, but that’s more of a direction problem. The way almost all of the spells/attacks were done, I wouldn’t be surprised at all if they were saving them up for stock animation later too. I expect better from A-1 and Satelight… although maybe they’ve left this one to their interns. It did pull itself together a little bit at the end, but that doesn’t forgive how poorly the first 95% of the episode was animated. At least it doesn’t abuse CG in any overly embarrassing way.

In any case, unless you’re a rabid fan of stuff like One Piece and its ilk and feel like they wouldn’t be hurt at all by slashing the production, there’s nothing for you here. Flee. Flee now. For those few brave souls that remain… well… you probably feel bad enough as it is, so help yourself to the M&Ms on the counter.

  • Yoite, the knitting emo says:

This was the worst thing of the year by far. FAAAAAAR.

  • Phenom says:

    ^ Agree completely!

Even RAVE which was a kids show from the same mangaka is miles better than this crap!

  • sage says:

I hope someone makes a collage of Lucy’s boobs that I can watch.

  • Chris says:

blabla you can always watch One Piece one of the worst shonen ever made

  • tien says:

well i rather wait till 2nd or 3rd episode to make a really good or bad comment about the show. u know third time is worth the charm.

  • TOP2NE1 says:

    @Chris

Just wondering, but what shonen do you like?

Because as far as the manga is concerned, OP is raping every other series in Jump.

And I don’t know about this episode. I didn’t think the animation was very fluid, and the jokes seemed watered down.

  • Seinime says:

One Piece is way better than this shit, hands down. Turned into the worst show I expect from this season.

  • Kaisos says:

    Wow. That was terrible.

I guess this is The Difference Between Various Forms of Media, huh? Fairy Tail worked as a manga, but here… ugh… how bad can you get?

  • elfmanxloki says:

the episode is very good !!
    i love it!!!!!
i am a fan of this manga!!!!!

  • yuuji says:

the transition from manga to anime turned out real bad. no wonder the mangaka didnt want another of his series to get screwed up by anime adaptation.

  • antimateria says:

I would pass this off as another POWER LEVEL shounen for 12-year-olds, but damn why do all the shounen main characters eat all the time. Why, tell me. It was never funny.

  • Hinano says:

you expect something good out of satellite after the debacle that is Kamichama Karin and the filler that is Shugo Chara? LOL

I’m probably going to watch this because I liked RAVE and this is basically RAVE but with magicians instead of swordsmen.

  • Chris says:

lol at this people saying that One Piece is better than Fairy Tail roflmao.. you people are funny, One Piece is the worst shonen ever lmao

  • Animenz says:

At least the male protagonist here in Fairy Tale isn’t a stupid airhead and a foolish douchebag like Ruffy in One piece.
So basically this show is already better than One Piece.

  • TOP2NE1 says:

You may be able to pull a few nuances or say Natsu is a little smarter, but you’re fucking lying to yourself if you think Luffy and Natsu are that different.

    @Chris

Once again, what do you consider good shonen? (Besides Fairy Tail)

  • Chris says:

    Fairy Tail >> One Piece
    now stop crying

  • TOP2NE1 says:

    Troll harder.

  • MADAO says:

Fuck, this shit sux my donkey balls.

  • […] Tenka Seiha pretty much says it all about the animation. […]

  • The Phantom says:

This anime is garbage, any further word is a waste.

  • SOSAnimeBoy says:

Ignoring all the animation and execution flaws, if they had at least duplicated the character design and ambience of the manga I would have stuck on. Major buzzkill how this has been diluted for a younger age group, making all the characters look 5 years younger than the manga.

  • Chris says:

The animation was cool just buy a new computer idiot

    • TehFreek says:

There’s no way a new computer could possibly help the Viewmaster-esque animation that was inflicted upon this show.

  • Dyn says:

I was very, very disappointed in this. I’ve read the manga and it’s pretty decent, especially after the first couple of chapters when more characters are introduced but this anime was bad.

Natsus voice actor just wasn’t in tune with the somewhat slapstick style of the show at all and the animation was downright horrible.

  • Chris says:

TEHFREEK ARE YOU RETARDED ? DO YOU KNOW WHAT A GRAPHIC CARD IS ?

  • Aroduc says:

As amusing as this is, this infliction upon man and beast has long since passed the point of intelligent discourse.
