A Certain Magical Letter Bee #01 — Endless Buzzing
October 3rd, 2009
There will be an answer, letter bee.
Season Premier Disclaimer:
I like to check almost every new show out. The value of a show is in its execution, not its premise. That said, my tastes are mine and mine alone. Some things bother me, some things don’t. I will attempt to be as cogent as possible as to my complaints or compliments for each show, but be aware that my views skew heavily towards the center. Nothing is perfect, nothing is irredeemable. That said, my tastes and my opinions are mine and mine alone and should not be construed as fact or, god help us, some kind of erudite critical analysis of the entire series based on the show’s first 20 minutes. Feel free to leave your own thoughts on the show if you’d like, but invective and similar will be mocked or deleted depending on which amuses me more at the time.
Impressions:
Good god. The first 6 minutes of the episode were nothing but exposition, followed by the attack of the giant CG beetle. Wait no, more exposition. I forgot that he had to explain how he fights too, and how his gun works, and then after killing it in one shot, more exposition on how your magic gun works. You’re killing me here, deadly deadly bees. Killing me. None of it was even subtle either. Just one long bout of expositional diarrhea from start to finish.
Art was all rather good, animation was essentially nonexistent for the vast majority of the episode. There was almost no BGM whatsoever, which certainly didn’t help the endless exposition… or the corniness of it either. "You shot me with your heart, and now I’m touched by you." I’m not sure whether to claw out my brain or my ears. Oh yeah, and as long as we’re pointing out the obvious cheapness quotient, the episode was 17 minutes long. Congrats, you’re 10% shorter than most shows and didn’t even make up for it by making the rest of the show any better. Although, I guess it’s a blessing that I didn’t have to set through another two minutes of it.
So, it’s pretty bad, albeit not exactly in the way that I expected. Maybe you could take it as a good sign that the exposition is all out of the way so now they could do something else… ANYTHING ELSE. That’s really not what you want to be feeling after the first episode though.
OP’s preemptively blocked on YouTube and I so do not care enough about this show to find somewhere else to upload it.

They certainly weren’t very liberal with their color pallete.
