The Vermillion Mask #02 — The Power of Exposition

October 17th, 2026

"You have thwarted me by reminding me how my power works."

Dreamland's first episode supposedly airs today, but it's the other French anime thing, and anything not getting an English simulcast has been irritating to get ahold of lately, so I'll keep an eye out, but who knows. I didn't forget about it though, unlike Welch and Shapir.

Impressions:

Eh. I don't have the animosity towards this as I do the cheat power shows, nor feel the disappointment that I do towards Suikoden since this never showed even a glimmer of budget. It's just… bog standard generic shounen. Where everyone's invincible until someone explains the other's power, which instantly defeats them. And when the response from the other party is "Oh, you're right. I completely forgot how my power works. Thanks. I'll die now." That's extra exasperating, even for this kind of schlock.

Fill in the rest of the time with characters declaring that they need to Do Their Best for What They Believe In through clenched teeth and giant teary eyes, and… that's about it. Seen one, seen a dozen. And this one isn't above average on any benchmarks. Definitely not animation or direction. Certainly not the awful writing. Characters are probably the closest to almost okay, but dude and his useless princess sidekick is a partnering going back like forty years. All they're missing is a magical pet.
