Modern Day Dara #01 — Fun Facts About Mountain Gods

What nobody has a level or status screens?
Impressions:
FINALLY we reach a day that's mostly not cheat power shows. There's still one, but three which aren't. This one is even sort of an attempt at comedy without screaming nonstop. My ears thank it. That said, it wasn't all that particularly funny either. Every gag was still a non-sequitur, but with a more deadpan "That is not the correct response to what I just said," declaration instead of screaming, pratfall, and explosion. Most of the episode was just the titular character reciting her backstory or explaining how yokai work, which as often as not, was immediately followed by "but that's not how it actually works anymore because of a technicality." Which then also needs to be explained. It's worlds better than learning that having a high level makes you stronger for the fifty seven thousandth time, but it's still not making me want to watch more.
And, of course, there's her ginormous nipples. Really using that AT-X broadcast to… not actually particularly good use here, as they didn't seem to want to commit, and gave her a bra halfway through the episode anyway. Which does feel like they were half-assing it on both the snake boobs and the horror aspects. It's hard to take a supposed harrowing murder scene seriously when you've got someone doing the cliche "ohohoho" laugh at the same time. Plus, a wall of exposition for largely exposition's sake isn't much of a narrative to actually construct any kind of story, even the thinnest sitcom kind of bit.

despite all the exposition dump that took half the episode i still don’t understand why they started hanging out with each other just now, the line of events seems pretty disconnected. snake woman had the mild tsukomi vibes and had me tensed up that this is that kind of comedy, but i hope not, also the areolas oh boy
