Japanese Three Kingdoms #01 — Playground Bullies

April 5th, 2026

I think they forgot to give the animators any direction.

Impressions:

Well, there's certainly a lot more going on with the visuals than I expected for a war drama, but I don't think most of it was too effective. There's both quite a bit of rotoscoping and the framerate is all over the place, especially when it comes to simple CGI stuff like panning the camera across the ground. Much of the visual flair is also used to be incredibly immature and childish. It's mainly for random gags, by which I mean the dude going "EEEEHHHHHH!?" which is a reaction to his child wife wanting to wear a wedding dress so 'funny' that it needed to be screamed, explained, and then explained a second time and screamed again just so other characters could then explain that's his personality.

That childishness also completely undercuts any of the actual serious moments. The antagonists of the episode who murder his wife are playground bullies, literally picking their nose and taunting him with "You gonna cry now!?" while hopping around like coked up six year olds. It's… stupid. Don't expect Shogun here. The tone is closer to Sonic the Hedgehog. And then the guy goes back to his carriage and is like "Damn, that dude was so cool for not crying. I respect him so much. He was so cool." So stupid AND completely nonsensical. Which is more than a small problem for what is clearly trying to be some kind of war drama.
