Suffer from it? Nah, I enjoy it.

New Season Disclaimer:

I try to watch at least the first episode of every new show in a season. However, do not expect anything I say to be fair or balanced. I value my own entertainment above all else and there are some genres or methods of presentation that I just plain do not like and I’m not going to pretend otherwise. I’ll attempt to at least make a cursory explaination of what did and did not please me about each show, but it’s just a simple fact of life that my tastes are mine alone. Feel free to express your own opinions in the comments, just keep it under control. This is just television after all.

Oh hey, I got tired of waiting for a decent raw again. That never happens. Although I did accidentally grab the marginally worse of the two versions I saw. Oopsies.

Impressions: 

Good lord, does this show have energy to spare. On one hand, it’s really really transparent about being descended from its 4 panel comic source and doesn’t even really bother to try to create an overall narrative for the episode, but on the other hand, whereas shows like Lucky Star or Hidamari stretched out one comic for two or three minutes, this blasts through its jokes instantly and moves right on to the next. There was a little bit of focus on them drawing warning signs for various nonsensical things, but that only lasted until we diverged into the GA Power Rangers. Unlike most of the other "girls drawing things" shows, this also focuses on more of the imbecile side of the artist equation. I suspect most of these girls still eat paste. Or paint.

Production is very stylish, if you assume that ‘spastic moe blob’ counts as a style. It’s not going to blow anybody away with its attention to details or complex animation, and certainly doesn’t have Shaft’s clever visual touches, but it’s definitely a very good fit for the humor. It’s the same kind of style that you see used for comic effect in a lot of the slice of life shows, except that in GA, it dominates the style instead of being reserved for punchlines. Like I said before, tons of movement and energy, but definitely not as exhausting to watch as Kemeko or Kyouran Kazoku Nikki were. Music was good and very appropriate to the content, although the OP and ED were both pretty lame.

If you were expecting this to be some kind of slice of life show similar to Sketchbook or Hidamari, you’re out of luck. It’s sort of like the hyperactive and ADD child of Pani Poni Dash, Azumanga, the Muppet Babies, and perhaps a cocker spaniel. I’m pretty sure I’ll be following along (what else am I going to do on Mondays?), but I’ll be damned if I have any clue what I’m going to say about it from week to week.

Also, I’m not really sure whether I should feel old or awesome for mentally applauding the Fresh Prince of Bel Air stealth awesome school uniform jacket trick.
