NieR Automata v1.1a #16 — Snake Balls

July 26th, 2024

But seriously, why are we in a desert fighting this thing?

Impressions:

A whole episode milking tragically dying, which, again, is undercut by the already multiple stabbings and self-destructs that take place every third or so episode. Yeah, sure, she got a big sword in her gut, but this wasn't the first time, and since they have backups in everything from moon servers to rubix cubes to now apparently swords, I'm not totally sure why we're screaming in anguish here. A new form of body/mind transfer was spat up literally seconds before it. But I guess we're supposed to take that 9S only knows about the first few ways to immortality and not any sword based ones. Okay, sure. It'll be a fun surprise for later when Ms Haircut-For-Character-Development decides to explain anything. Yes, I'm aware that doesn't happen and 9S is likely to spend the rest of this timeline in a slobbering rage.

And then there's the random ball snake out of nowhere. In a desert. Was this a meaningful boss in the game? A bunch of spheres popping up out of the sand to sort of be in the way but not actually? Why is he suddenly in a completely different biome fighting some goofy monster that looks like something Dr. Robotnik would have come up with? He fought that, and then traveled miles away all in the time that she stumbled about 20 feet and got stabbed? Am I understanding the logistics here correctly? Why not have him just faceplant onto the ground at terminal velocity a few hundred feet away? Did we miss some entire dungeon but still wanted to include the boss for no particular reason? Is the ball snake a fan favorite? I have so many questions, and none of them have to do with the actual story.

to correct you they dont have any backups now that the bunker destroyed. 2b is gone for good this time

  • residentgrigo says:

The last 2 ep went out of their way to show that death and bodily destruction are permanent now and most bosses in the game are meaningless. The protagonist has now exited the story. 9S was the lead character all along.

  • residentgrigo says:

Forgot. 9S was created before 2B but he rarely got a backup at the moment of death. Often deliberately. His dozens of deaths at the hands of 2B and even the events of the pilot can be viewed as parallel lives without continuity for him. What happens if he is forced to be confronted with that, well…

B2 and her “older sister” A2 -2B is basically version 1.1 of that robot line so they look like near clones- lived one uninterrupted life.

  • elior says:

@aroduc there is no more backups or replacements to the androids since the bunker been destroyed. as for 2b sword she just showed A2 what happened in her past which will continue next episode but anyway 2b is gone this time forever

  • residentgrigo says:

Only a deus ex machina could restore a robot that first had its consciousness corrupted and was then physically and mentally destroyed beyond any recovery in front of the player in a world where tools to repair or rebuild such machines don´t even exist anymore.

J-RPGs of course don´t use such cheap writing gimmicks and Yoko Taro is well known for writing straightforward and singular ending to his science-fantasy scripts. The sacrifices of Bucky Barnes, Jason Todd, Tidus and Father/Brother Nier will never be forgotten because they are dead F O R E V E R.

Fun facts: All 4 endings of Drakengard 3, a bad game in every way, are non-canon to it´s sequels Drakengard 1 and Nier 1. The canon conclusion ended up being the one made up for the novelization. Said book never left Japan and Taro didn´t even write that book.
