The Apothecary Diaries #03 — Dancing in the Moonlight

October 21st, 2023

Please stop romanticizing being sold into slavery.

Impressions:

This one was entirely focused on the mystery of the (not exactly) week, and put almost all its eggs in the melodramatic basket. Literally, with the ending insert song and cranking up the heart-string yanking to maximum, but I don't know that I prefer that on balance to the more humor focused things. Or maybe it's just that the central mystery here was predicated on basically every character both fretting over Random Dancer's sleep-dancing but also lacking the curiosity to pursue it any further than wringing their hands and being very, deeply concerned.

This was a mystery that entirely hinged on every character knowing one and only one specific fact about this lady, and none of them ever having a conversation with each other about her, just each telling Maomao their one factoid in turn, like they were NPCs in a lazy game. A (max sarcasm quotes) """""random"""" dude specifically requested that she be given to him. I wonder if there's any connection between them. Nah. Not worth looking into. Not to mention that they're shocked by the reveal that she was faking being useless/damaged despite catching on to Maomao doing the exact same thing before. Wait, two people can do the same thing? Unbelievable! Although I'm not sure what her plan exactly was here. Be really good at dancing, change your mind and screw up, then pretend to be crazy? I feel like you could've skipped a step or two, or started talking to walls instead of getting dolled up to dance on walls.
