A Returner’s Magic Should Be Animated #01 — …But Isn’t

October 7th, 2023

Bad day for budgets, eh, anime?

Impressions:

The second of the two Saturday shows about traveling back in time to avert the apocalypse of CGI dragons, which is specific enough to be weird, but sure beats the apocalypse of being a self-centered bastard. And man, does it make me feel conflicted for calling Ragna Crimson's action scenes mediocre. The only thing stopping me from calling the animation here godawful and nonexistent is that awful Pig Liver show I just watched which really shows how to put in absolutely no effort whatsoever. It is atrocious, though I can't say that I expected different from Arvo.

Its pacing is, if anything, possibly worse than Ragna Crimson too, just with the fight moved to the start rather than the end. They then sit in a circle and announce to each other how horrible the apocalypse has been before the dragon finally gets around to blowing up, which is apparently a thing that dragons do, to also be explained in 3-4 paragraphs. At this point, we finally reach the premise given away in the title of traveling back in time, halfway through the episode and… that's it. The next ten minutes are essentially filler where he wonders to himself if he really has gone back in time, and then decides that yes, he has indeed gone back in time, with repeated flashbacks to his flashbacks. It is so goddamned slow with only listening to Generic Noble #1 and Generic Noble #2 have Generic Noble Spat as he stares blankly like a frog in headlights. Something happen. Please. Oh, wait. We don't have the budget for that.
