Nier Automata v1.1a #09-10 — Robo Pope

July 25th, 2023

Oh no. A robo schism.

Impressions:

Oh, hey. Remember this show? I barely do. But I guess I'll finish off at least this first half today split between today and tomorrow. So it's with mixed feelings that it spews out a whole bunch of exposition for the first bit because I honestly can't remember what was even really going on, let alone what was already changed or revealed differently from the game. I am fairly certain that the whole reveal that the alien and human overlords are all dead was 'new' though, and from my understanding, was more of an endgame reveal about the futility of the entire game to that point. Also, pretty certain it was the naked brother who died, though I would not be at all surprised if the suicidal robo cult was reenacting the scene from Terminator 2 either way.

Oddly, it wasn't the miniboss fight that got the lion's share of the budget. Eve went out literally with his first appearance in four months being impaled. Fighting Random Generic Robots in the following episode was far longer, even while the mini-boss fight there got very glossed over. It was nice to see some actual animation and remember what a decent fight scene can look like, Malevolent Spirits. But after four months of radio silence, any investment I had is kind of gone and it's difficult to jump right back in to a story that feels like it's being abruptly speedrun, even while I know that there's all of A2's stuff still untouched.

The anime killed the other brother but the plot goes on without any major differences after that. The Dutch Angles and whatnot seen when 2B enters the robot cult are 1 to 1 from the game.
