Tenpuru #01 — Screaming Boobs
July 8th, 2023
If it's loud, that means it's funny, right?
Not to skip over Ayaka, but I did glance through the second episode, and it was also pretty awful. I think the thing that gets me the most is that the monsters aren't doing anything at all. They just randomly run into one out of nowhere, meandering around. "I mean, I guess we should fight it. What else is there to do? It's a monster." So it's a second meet and greet episode. Why does that show even exist? What on Earth am I going to do with Saturdays?
Impressions:
This is certainly an unabashed Love Hina wannabe, right down to all the slapstick, accidental gropings and wardrobe malfunctions, boinging closeups of breasts, screaming various synonyms of pervert, and over the top violence. All the awful cliches of 2005 to 2010, back in force. Preferable to the cheat power and quirky girlfriend nonsense of the present day? Probably not, but at least it's an unusual flavor. Like getting a big bite of charcoal when you expected balsa wood. He goes to contrived all girl shack, literally stumbles into each in turn, accidentally feeling them all up along the way, and moves in with them. Same as all the others.
I won't deny that I've watched some of these ilk in the past, enjoyed a few even. Especially back during the nacent years of the blog. But I've passed on the fair share too, which gets me introspective about what sets them apart. Fanservice is a spice, not the meat of a meal. It can be a mindless thing to fill the gaps in between at least the smallest whiff of actual substance, which used to be a given when most of these were either adaptations of VNs or trying to ape them, so had character arcs built in. I'm pretty sure that the ones I've liked, or at least been able to tolerate, veered much more towards having more likable casts, followed by the actual presentation, particularly of the humor. If everybody is just going to be screaming misunderstandings as both their personalities and the 'jokes,' it's just trying to sell obnoxiousness in between its bad fanservice.
