Reborn as a Vending Machine #01 — Browsing Menus

July 5th, 2023

The statusiest of screens.

Impressions:

Yup. Exactly as atrocious as it appeared. Of the variety where the protagonist unleashes a nonstop diarrhea of internal narration despite nothing more exciting happening than browsing some menus. Which it shows each and every one of, in close-up for god only knows what reason. Because maybe showing the fully status screen at any time would overwhelm the minds of the people who like these kinds of things, and you've got to hold something back to tease them for later.

I don't even want to play the game of "how would you salvage this?" because it pretty much starts with "make a completely different show." Have a story. Have characters. Have some animation. Have some comedy. Have anything. I can at least tell in those vapid (non) romance things where it's intending for a moment to have been cute or funny, even if it in no way was, but this just has its premise. He was reincarnated as a vending machine. That's it. That's your joke. No further comedy, story, or anything required. Eat your reincarnation slop.

I wonder if things have degraded far enough that the manga about being reincarnated as a woman´s bath is being considered for an adaptation… The semi-ok Wladimir Putin Issekai manga (Ride-On King) might be the only one off the table at this point.

The Suicide Squad has at least participated in genuine Isekai stories since the 00s in the comics but we really are digging into hell in terms of ideas and production values with the sub-genre at this point. Putting mechs and ESP into everything were better trends. The still ongoing “battle school” trend is as bad.
