The Marginal Service #03 — “We’re Aware of Popular American Movies”
April 25th, 2023
So, uh, random birdy lady served what purpose exactly?
Sorry this is a little delayed. I literally just fell asleep during a particularly pointless meeting slightly earlier for an impromptu nap. I blame the dogs waking me up at 5am.
Impressions:
I want to say that they're trying so hard to actually take cues from other popular things. Hell, they even use a poor quasi-rendition of the Mission Impossible theme when doing the fake heist bit. But it was just for about one and a half jokes, most of which was "this is like Mission Impossible." At which point it completely abandons the entire heist thing that it only barely even started. Then from there, it steals the Indiana Jones joke of just pulling out a gun while the other side is brandishing their weapon… except that was also a joke. So instead they just jump up on stage and start gyrating randomly because the magical skull they were there to steal was being used to mix giant cocktails for no explained reason.
Magical Destroyers has frantic energy and nonstop action in its characters, presentation,a nd style that helps it get away with over the top nonsense while this comes off as an irritated adult reading out someone's completed Mad Lib. There's about three or four different gags here that might work, but they're just thrown out in essentially isolation, not working together or with the show's writing and characters. It feels so awkward and out of place, like the director doesn't actually understand the jokes that the writer is telling him are funny. God, I wish this was better than it actually is ending up being.

Like I said, this show desperately wants to be like Akiba Maid War so badly in how it’s a stupid, absurd comedy where our dumb leads are put in wacky situations while being a “homage” to something. And yet CyGames can’t even get that lightning to strike twice because the very issues that affect this show were the exact same problems that dragged that maid Yakuza show down too: It’s not funny.
