Blue Orchestra #01 — Balls to the Face
April 9th, 2023
Sad violin boys feeling sorry for themselves.
Impressions:
And we end our day of banal school nonsense, which I'm including Gundam in, with a very sad boy with daddy issues, who spends the entire goddamned episode moping about it. He liked music, but daddy was abusive and neglectful, so now he feels nothing for anything any more, until a quirky girl with a violin stumbles into his life and he is shocked… shocked to the core… at the existence of orchestra club while being told to do it by a teacher, because he obviously has no control of his life whatsoever and cannot do anything but take balls to the face repeatedly.
I think that they're probably trying to make it more down to the Earth and dramatic by stripping out magical violin powers or being transported to the orchestra dimension, except that from the promos, I'm well aware that does indeed happen. The latter at least. But they're not making interesting characters, and certainly not ones that have any kind of chemistry with those around them. Dude is just a sad sack, shambling around, doing whatever anybody tells him. Girl is abrasive and yelly. They work as well together as a lump of coal and a second lump of coal. Hell, they don't even get to any actual music or orchestra-ing this episode. Is this not supposed to be the lead? Or are we really here for 18 minutes of a dude feeling super duper sorry for himself?
