Sugar Apple Fairy Tale #01 — Flexible Morality
January 6th, 2023
Slavery for me, not for thee.
There are at least six shows premiering today, up from the five I had thought as of yesterday. This is going to be a long grind.
Impressions:
This was just as awful as I imagined a show romanticizing slavery would be. Sure, she hates the concept of racist slavery, but that doesn't mean she's not going to engage in it. And when her slave misbehaves by calling her names or speaking ill of her family, she's not above threatening them with violence. Repeatedly. How dare they not give her the respect she deserves as their owner! But she feels super duper bad about the whole thing, so that doesn't just make it okay, it makes her a shining beacon of morality in this racist world.
And that's all there is to it really. You might've salvaged at least part of it by having her actually realize that she's also a huge racist, but nah. When he tries to steal his wing back, she realizes that she can't trust him. That's as much character development as you're getting. He tells her that she's an ass relying on violence, and she blushes because OH EM GEE, his face is so close and she's just an innocent girl, exactly at the age of legality, which is an actual quote straight from the episode. Ye gods.
