Revenger #01 — Making Opium Boring

Even procedurals move faster than this.

Impressions:

You'd think that a show about a bunch of assassins embroiled in a drug war, trying to avenge the death of his family and accidentally causing the suicide of the woman he loved by murdering her father would not be so boring, but that's what happens when the entire thing is told through the medium of dudes sitting in a room, explaining the above in a flat monotone for 15 straight minutes. Nothing says organic conversation like cutting over to the drug lord to have his underlings recap the entire state of organized crime affairs and all his past activities over the last few months. The writing here is not the best, and especially the pacing is godawful.

The short more actiony bits were a little better, but also corny as all hell and just a montage of each dude in turn gruesomely executing some random guard, usually while doing a silly pose. The white dude's paper bit was the worst by far, but none were impressive at all from either a directorial or an animation front. Hell, one was just a dude throwing stuff. You've got Kiteman, Poison Paper, Shouty Sword, and… Throws Stuff. I guess at least we didn't have to suffer through each one's backstory, but that's presumably for future episodes, and I'd have to imagine also told through "dudes sitting in a room speaking in monotone." How exciting.
