The Thousand Noble Musketeers #01 — No Girls Allowed

And yet, half of them have womens' names and a third are in dresses and makeup.

Impressions:

What a goddamned tedious episode of terribleness. If it spent a tenth the time on creating an actual dystopia as it did talking about how they were living in one, then… No, the boy band music would've still kicked in for that godawful ending 'fight' of a magical boy transformation sequence, unlimited ammo, god mode, and the enemies simply falling over. And this came after about a minute straight of them declaring all was lost and they were hopeless to do anything. But wait, what about our magic powers that turn us utterly invincible? Oh, right. PRETTY BOY ACTIVATE.

We had time for multiple long exposition bits. We had time to argue about who gets crepe. We had time to say hello to about twenty different characters before ditching them by the side of the road. We had time for a goofy montage set to a wailful ballad. And yet, we didn't have time to animate, write, or characterize. Unless, of course, this insubstantial whiff of nothinginess is all the story, characters, and animation you're going to get, which I'll bet dollars to donuts it is.

I admit it: I would love to see a “no girls allowed on the battlefield” show where the girls train hard, get really good with tanks, or muskets, or whatever–and then discover that battle is not a game, and that it requires a wide range of strengths and skills. Also, no water, and tampons are in the first aid kit (bullet holes), not in the personal hygiene kit.

That spiffy uniforms look terrible after a day in the mud and blood.

That they’re being protected by the guys, and don’t even realize it.

That a really determined guy who outweighs a really determined girl by half can pick her up and toss her aside, regardless of her martial arts moves.

That there is a terrible price to be paid by a girl who gets captured by an enraged testosterone monster.

And that girls can do vital things while the guys are getting mowed down, and fight like little demons when defending those in their care, given the right tools.

The existence of tampons at all hints at a level of maturity and understanding of history that I have yet to see in any Japanese show.
