Hey, Darling, You Know Franxx? #21 — HORN POWER

June 16th, 2018

Boy, what can't those magic horns do?

Impressions:

I hope you didn't think that we were done with the flashbacks, because we ain't. And boy, what a critically important character Princess 01 turned out to be, well worth the two goddamned months of teasing about her. She dragged Hiro off, got wrapped up in silly string, got to listen to him give a pep talk, and then give a pep talk to the audience about how these plucky teens are our future before erasing all the silly string with the power of her magic horn from beyond the grave. What did Hiro do? Suck and die. His purpose in the big climactic final battle is to sit there and have emotions. What did 02 do? Claw at some silly string, make out with a corpse, and then yell about how she's never giving up. That's enough to let them pop out of the ground and shoot literally one laser blast, obliterating the entire Imperial Fleet. Also, there was a evacuation ship-spear or something. But what of the horrible price? Pfft. That's your cliffhanger? We've resolved literally everything, but then decrying "What of this horrible price we literally just said existed!?" You've been to that well at least four or five times already. It's not working. And let me tell you, either option of an entire episode of maudlin angst about it, or they just don't go through with it like they have every other horrible price ain't exciting me for the afterparty.

So really, par for the course all around. I guess knocking some teenager up wasn't the aliens undoing after all. It was having feelings and a magical laser cannon. Now that I mention it, the rest of Team Teenager was the 'action' part of the episode, so of course, they also spent most of it waffling around yelling "WHAT'S GOING ON!?" Admittedly, I empathisize with the sentiment. This was juxtaposed against the Children of the Corn squad as usual, who were contributing two different pieces of dialogue "ALL FOR PAPA" and "RRRAAAAAAAAGH." And that would be the sum total of their contribution to this big finale. It's almost like they had no point whatsoever.

4 Shouts From the Peanut Gallery

  • Birdway says:

Basically the series lost 20 episodes in the fights of couples of the other characters because the real plot was an intergalactic war between aliens, but nice I’m more interested in the klaxosaurs and Strelizia than the awful teens.

  • Dave Baranyi says:

So what are they going to do for the remaining three episodes – more beach parties?

    • Aroduc says:

You know, I just sort of assumed next week would be the last episode. I can’t even imagine how they’re going to spend almost an entire month. I mean, good god, three episodes is as long as that dumb interstitial arc between the giant hand and this abortive wiping out of all antagonists.

  • The Phantom says:

So she was a lame clone, and now they are against a intergalactic… face? Also the backstory of the Alien girl is so stupid, she was waiting underground and that’s it, really?, the enemies being ex aliens is also BS, absolutely wham! episode.
