The Land of Altair #01 — Teenage Power Fantasy
July 7th, 2017
Oh good. Another teenage wunderkind outsmarting adults with laughably contrived nonsense.
Impressions:
I have to admit, this is the first episode today to make me laugh. The 'climax' moment in the middle was so bad and so stupid. They do this big thing about him investigating, including a mini-montage, and then the epiphany moment comes when he… apparently examines the evidence for the very first time, and it's obvious to him at a glance that it's a particularly half-assed fake. Set to a blaring electric guitar. Most of the rest of the episode is consumed by a flashback, ending with his grand plan to throw a pot of stew on some bandits and have a conveniently nearby flock of nocturnal falcons harass them… until they gave up, let one little teenager take them all captive, and then confess the entire plot, which everyone involved accepts as gospel. I think I might be able to point out a few issues here.
And yet, that would somehow be a relief from the first half of the episode, which may as well have been titled "Ew! Girls! Cooties!" with the subtitle of "I'm not a child!" And perhaps the tagline of "And my bird does all the work." Yes, rather than do anything with the busty girl who snuck into his bed, he's going to have a tantrum and runs off to sulk with his bird. Rather than argue his point, the moment he's told to back off, he throws a tantrum and runs off to sulk with his bird. The bird is more of a hero here than he is. It's the one who fights the two quasi-antagonists of the episode while he stands gloating about his superiority. I'm not even sure what we were supposed to take from about the first eight minutes of the show at all. That he's terrified of women and is the world's youngest super genius appointed to a respected position that nobody but the girl respects? Perhaps he should stamp his feet and whine more about nobody else understanding him.
