Poco’s Udon World #01 — Manic Tanuki Girl

October 8th, 2016

I am shocked by this thing already revealed seventeen minutes prior.

Impressions:

Here's (finally) our second in the day's subgenre of "world-weary young adult male cohabitates with precocious girl who heals his soul." This one's a lot more by the numbers than the earlier thing, which is to say that it's a lot less angsty. Then again, a wake would probably have less angst. It's more consistent overall, and the standard manic pixie girl isn't being forcefed nothing but Pepsi, so doesn't constantly vibrate in place. It's definitely trying to be more adorable than 'funny,' which is a good thing because the comedy's also the standard I HAVE SUDDENLY SHOUTED SOMETHING terribleness.

I don't know that there's much else to say. He mostly bums around, goes on a tour of the characters, has some traumatic udon-related flashbacks about the crushing burden society/family placed upon him, and the big twist at the end is… the manic pixie girl is actually a tanuki, which will surely come as a dramatic surprise to all the people who skipped the opening. Not that it stops the protagonist from staring, and staring… and staring… in shocked wonder as sunbeams cascade around him at the sheer super duper craziness of this reveal. And then, because they accidentally ended the episode at 18 minutes long, here's a two minute flash short of the show within the show.

7 Shouts From the Peanut Gallery

  • JCA says:

Gotta pull in the monstergirl fandom.

  • PP2 says:

I’m thinking the reason why the girls in these shows look like boys (look at Barakamon too) is because the writer wanted to have a boy but if they were actually a boy they’d have to follow the Japanese writers’ law of turning it into a yaoi.

  • Longhaul says:

I thought the tanuki was supposed to be a little boy?

  • Opulent Rag says:

I’m seeing this as just another incestuous lolibait fodder. Is it just me or is that just how lazy and formulaic these types of anime have become?

  • nikolai131 says:

Poko, le tanuki, is a boy! lol

  • The Phantom says:

The plot is terrible but on top of that it looks cheap as hell.
